Mix science and art to create your own abstract masterpiece! Listen to the fizz and watch the colors bubble in a new spin on the good old baking soda and vinegar trick.

Supplies: Fizzy Fuzzy Painting

  • White Paper (cardstock or similar)
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food Coloring
  • Dropper or Pipette (optional)

Instructions

This activity can get messy, so you may want to protect your work surface! Prepare your colors by adding a few drops of food coloring to a couple tablespoons of vinegar. Use separate containers for the number of colors you would like to use.

a piece of paper with an even layer of fine, white "sand-like" baking soda on it

Spread a thin layer of baking soda over your paper.

a pipette is visible above the evenly-spread baking soda into little dots

Drip colored vinegar over your paper in any pattern and watch it fizz! Cover your paper as much as desired with your colors.

Gently shake or brush off any larger pieces of baking soda, then let your creation dry completely. Once all the way dry, brush off any excess baking soda.

You can turn your beautiful art as-is or turn it into stationary, bookmarks, or a journal cover. Let your imagination run wild!
