Today, we’ll transform a simple pompom into a space monster! Cute, ugly or fun, use your hands and imagination to create one or many little aliens. This craft exists in 2 modes: easy and super easy. For the super easy mode, just skip the making of the pompom, and use an already made one.

Supplies:

  • a pompom already made OR wool + a large needle to make one
  • cardboard
  • scissors
  • glue
  • googly eyes (or small buttons)
  • anything you can find to customize your monster in your own way: glitter, pipe cleaners, felt, colored paper, little pompoms, etc.

Instructions:

Step 1 – Make the Pompom

There are tons of ways of creating a pompom from yarn, I’ll explain the one I know best. First, take the cardboard and cut it to get this form.

You can use a cup and an egg cup to draw the form of the template. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be perfect ! Wrap the yarn around the cardboard disc, but not too tight. You’ll have to wrap several layers for the pompom to get fluffy.

Cut a bit of yarn and use a large needle to pass it through the layers; then tie a knot very tight and secure it with a second knot. It will stick the bits of yarn all together, so tie it VERY tight. You can now cut the yarn all around the cardboard disc, on the exterior. Tadaaa! You now have a cute pompom.

Step 2 – Create a Space Monster

First, take the time to think about your space monster. Does it come from a super chilly planet, so barely any limb will stick out of its fur? Or from an ocean-covered planet, and it will have fins and tentacles? Maybe will he fly? Have 3 eyes? Gather everything you’ll need for this alien to exist!

It will probably need: eyes, you can glue one, two, three or more googly eyes on the pompom a stand, usually the form of feet, claws of tentacles drawn on some cardboard or felt, that you’ll glue under the pompom limbs and antennas that you can make using felt, cardboard, paper, pipe cleaners… a mouth of teeth cut in paper or felt!

Of course, nothing is mandatory, and you can have fun putting together a weird alien with no mouth or arms, but lots of antennas and feet.

Take a picture of your creation and don’t forget to show us the result!
