Welcome to Inside the Theme! Each month your intrepid IGGPPC staffers will answer a few questions about the theme of this month’s pen pal round. We hope it gives you some insight into why these themes were chosen and help you get to know the staff a little bit better. Our theme for Round 61 was Level Up! We asked our staff about their favorite games and MOAR.

Do you play video games? Arcade games? Tabletop games?

Amanda
“All of the above! Video game: Alice Madness Returns tops my list. It’s beautiful and spooky and I’m excited that they’re working on a new Alice game! Arcade: Pacman or Ms. Pacman, forever and ever. Tabletop: D&D, obviously. :)”

Joanna
“I don’t play video games as much as I used to (but used to spend hours with Baldur’s Gate and Fable and Disney Infinity). Now I’m more into tabletop when I can get enough friends together! Favorites include Betrayal at House on the Hill, Smallworld, and we’ve been learning Hogwarts Battle (a deck building game).”

Kara
“Yes yes yessss. I play a lot of computer and mobile games. Lately I’ve been in love with Night in the Woods, although Earthbound is kiiinda calling my name.”

Kim
“All of the above! I’m a retro girl, so I love the classics like Castlevania and Burger Time!”

Mafalda
“Yes! The Sims is my favorite video game! As for tabletop games the oldy but goody Monopoly wins everytime!”

Summer
“I’ve been playing tabletop games since I was two and video games since elementary school. Don’t make me choose favorites! One of my current fav tabletop games is Ladies & Gentlemen. It’s a silly silly game.”

Steena
“I have played video games; I enjoyed Skyrim, the Lego games, Disney Infinity, and Diablo 3. I usually watch; I rode co-pilot for Assassin’s Creed and the Uncharted series. And I used to love PC games like Myst, The Last Express, and THE AMERICAN GIRLS PREMIERE PC game. Nowadays we’re hobby tabletop gamers with an ever growing collection. In fact, my partner and I have challenged ourselves to play 104 games in 52 weeks.”

If you play video games, do you have a preferred console?

Amanda
“I prefer the XBox One for consoles games, I find the controller a better fit for me.”

Joanna
“My phone haha. I’ve got an original Xbox and a 360.”

Kara
“Why can’t everything be on SNES?”

Kim
“ColecoVision is my main squeeze…but I’m really loving the Switch right now.”

Mafalda
“We always had a PlayStation, for some time we had a WII too… But… PlayStation wins!”

Summer
“I’m into PC games right now because I am saving up for a PS4 and a Switch! Maybe someday soon!”

Steena
“Uff da, my family had a SEGA Genesis growing up but, with 3 older brothers, I didn’t get to play it very often. I have enjoyed using the Wii and PS4 in adult life.”

What real life skill do you want to “level up”?

Amanda
“Hand lettering. I’d like to get to where it’s a form of artistic outlet rather than a frustrating past-time.”

Joanna
“My art-ing. I’ve always played around with art but never pushed to develop the skills, and I’m in a class this semester that’s reminding me how vital art is for science. So I want to stretch myself a little and see if I can put my meager skills into better practice!”

Kara
“Playing the drums. Gotta practice those rudiments, yo. If I add drum drills to my Habitica to do list, then I basically get to watch myself level up on them!”

Kim
“I’ve been playing a LOT of Skyrim, so going along with that, I’d want to level up Speech. (How to be less socially awkward when talking to people.)”

Mafalda
“Work better with the time I have! So my to-do list gets smaller and not bigger every day!”

Summer
“Swordfighting! Is that what Amanda said too? And also I’ve been getting into metalsmithing. So I’d love to get better at that!”

Steena
“There are so many things I’d like to level up – things like Korean language skills and cooking confidence. But all those things come down to motivation more than anything else, I think. Roll for initiative!”
