For this craft, your creative collaborator will be the sun! Making your sundial doodle will take a few hours, but you don’t need to be there all that time – you just need to check in once an hour, then do some doodling at the end.
Supplies:
- Paper
- Pens
- Blue tak
Instructions:
Part One: Sundial
Step 1 – Set up your piece of paper in a sunny spot. (Rise and shine, campers – the best time to do this is the morning!) If you’re setting up your sundial doodle outside, make sure to weigh it down with some books so it doesn’t blow away!
Step 2 – Stick a small mound of blue tak in the centre of the paper. Stick a pen or something similar (like a skewer or straw) upright in the blue tak.
Step 3 – Your pen should now cast a line-shaped shadow on your paper. Draw along this line.
Step 4 – Leave your sundial doodle and go do other fun camp things! Come back a few times throughout the day – the shadow will move. Each time you return to your sundial doodle, draw a line along the new shadow.
Step 5 – Some optional tips: you could set a reminder to come back to your sundial doodle, perhaps once an hour. Why not make it into a mindful routine? Every time you draw a new shadow line, have a stretch and drink some water!
Part Two: Doodles
Step 6 – When sunset comes, it’s time to decorate your sundial lines. Feel free to use your original piece of paper, or trace over the lines onto a fresh piece of paper or journal.
Step 7 – Optional step: colour in between each line, so you have lots of colourful segments!
Step 8 – Doodle different patterns between each line. For example, some of my segments have stars, some have zigzags, some have galaxies…
Step 9 – If you want to add a bit more space adventure to your doodles, you can add in a spaceship traversing between all your segments!
