In the 1985 film, Back to the Future, Marty McFly is transported back in time to 1955. Most of the action takes place at the local diner, milkshakes, soda jerks, etc. But if Marty had been invited to a dinner party, he very well may have come across this 1955 recipe from Dole.
Pineapple Jell-O in a Can Supplies:
- 1 No.2 can (about 20 oz) sliced pineapple
- 1 box Jell-O gelatin dessert (or Simply Delish plant-based jel dessert). Choose your flavor but lime is suggested.
- 1/2 the water requirement listed on the gelatin box.
Pineapple Jell-O in a Can Instructions:
1. FLIP YOUR CAN OF PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN. New cans have a keyed top, YOU WANT THIS SIDE FOR THE END. (More on this later.)
2. Pour off liquid from can of Dole Sliced Pineapple. (I used mine in a smoothie!)
3. Mix gelatin or jel dessert according to package directions, USING HALF THE WATER REQUIRED.
4. Fill the can with your gelatin liquid. Fill to the brim as the pineapple will soak up some of the liquid.
3. Chill until set.
4. Run a little hot water on can sides and bottom to loosen. DON’T SKIP THIS.
5. Then use key to open “bottom” (usually the top) from the can and use to push mold out.
6. Cut between pineapple slices and serve.
7. Serve on a leaf of lettuce, as pictured in the original advertisement. (Optional.)
Lessons learned: I forgot about using the keyed end to get my mold out, as you can see. So it didn’t retain its shape. It still tasted swell but presentation left something to be desired.
