Whether they’re a proud member of the Federation of Planets, aboard a Kingon Bird of Prey, or simply visiting Deep Space 9, all space farers need top-notch foods to fuel their adventures! This spin on traditional pancakes is a snap to prepare, no flipping (or replicator) involved! Instead, you’ll mix up your batter, pour into a prepared pan, top with goodies of your choice, and bake for a few minutes to create sliceable sheet pancakes good enough for the Alpha, Beta, Delta–even Gamma Quadrant–and every space station, asteroid belt, moon, and planet in between. Adapted from Feel Good Foodie’s “Sheet Pancakes” recipe (click to view).

Supplies:

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 cups (300 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar
  • 2 table spoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (473 ml) milk of choice (I usually use almond milk, but blue or any other sort will do.)
  • 2 eggs or egg replacer equivalent (Earth chicken, not xenomorph, please)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or oil
  • 1 teaspoon Talaxian vanilla (the earth variety will do just fine in a pinch)
  • Cooking spray/oil to coat the pan
  • Toppings of choice, any combination of: chocolate chips, sliced strawberries/bananas or other fruit, blueberries/raspberries/blackberries, mini marshmallows, cinnamon, cinnamon sugar, chocolate candies (M&Ms, Reese’s, Reese’s Pieces, etc.), crumbled cookies of your choice (Oreos?)
  • Garnishes & serving goodies: syrup, honey, additional fruit/candy,cookies, whipped cream, melted peanut butter or Nutella, sprinkles, peanut butter/butterscotch chips…the possibilities are endless!

Tools:

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 medium-sized mixing bowl
  • Spatula or spoon (I suggest silicone, but wood or metal will work too!)
  • Whisk or fork
  • Measuring cups/kitchen scale
  • Measuring spoons
  • Sheet pan or baking pan (be sure it’s metal for optimal heat distribution)*

*Note: A 13×18 inch (33×45 cm) rectangular or large round pan will do, but I like the ease of adding different topping “zones” or that comes with a rectangular baking pan. Be sure that your pan is deep enough to hold your batter and/or have several pans at the ready. Remember that different depths will yield different baking times, so keep any eye on your creation in the oven regardless of baking vessel chosen.

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (218 Celsius), grease your pan, and gather your ingredients.

Use your fork or whisk to gently combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder together in the large bowl. In the medium-sized bowl, use the fork/whisk to gently combine the milk, oil/butter, eggs, and vanilla.

Star Trek Voyager crew eating pancakes

Become an asteroid and (gently!) make a crater in the center of your dry ingredients using your spatula or spoon. Pour the wet ingredients into the crater and stir to combine. Some lumps are okay, but do your best to minimize them if you can.

Pour your finished batter into your baking pan(s), spread evenly, and top with various goodies. A few of my favorite combinations are:

  • The Janeway: Fruit & dark chocolate chips (the photo above shows a recent blueberry/chocolate chip combination)
  • The Neelix (aka S’more’s): chocolate chip and mini marshmallows (I suggest adding the marshmallows to the batter before pouring then topping with chocolate chips)
  • The Tom Paris: strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries
  • The Tuvok: Apple Cinnamon
  • The B’lana Torres : bananas only (be sure to top with whipped cream and serve with maple syrup, though.)

If you have several crew members at your table, you can put different toppings or topping combinations in several areas of your sheet pancakes.

Bake for 15-17 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out from a center, batter-only area clean.

Cut into slices, top with your favorite garnishes/extras (I like additional fruit, agave or maple syrup, and whipped cream), and serve with your favorite replicated beverage. You can order those as follows:

  • “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot”
  • “Coffee. Black.”
  • “Raktijino.”

Janeway getting coffee

Other Sheet Pancake variations: swap the vanilla for 1/4 teaspoon almond extract (or add in addition to vanilla); use dried fruit instead of fresh; add in a dash (or three…) of pumpkin spice or another favorite spice blend.

Janeway meme: There's coffee in that nebula

Enjoy this spin on a classic breakfast that is sure to keep you fueled for all of space camp. In my opinion, Gamma Quadrant Sheet Pancakes are best enjoyed with a steaming cup of black coffee and Star Trek: Voyager playing in the background. Oh, and if you run out of coffee: just hop over to the next nebula.
