Panel “The Latina Superheroes Behind the Scenes”
“There’s a lot of talk about representation on screen. As much as Hollywood strives for diversity and inclusion initiatives, the needle hasn’t moved much. Luckily, there are some creatives behind the scenes challenging the status quo. These trailblazers are not just advocating for change, they are creating it.”
We’re excited to see this panel Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 6:30pm PDT in Room 7AB
Panel: Jonell Joshua on “How Comics Can Empower Marginalized Teens”
Jonell is the author of the autobiographical
How Do I Draw These Memories. In
her book, Jonell explores her childhood living with her mother and her brothers while her mother struggled with mental health. She and her siblings sometimes lived with grandparents, moving and switching schools, when her mother couldn’t provide them the home they needed due to her bipolar disorder. It’s a powerful story of a family full of love figuring out the best ways for them to be together. The book is told in a multimedia format: with personal essays, illustrated memories, and comics-format chapters.
The panel will be Saturday, July 27th at 6pm PDT in Room Grand 12/13 at the Marriott Marquis.
Panel” Diversity in Fantasy
“Our panel aims to redefine the narrative landscape of fantasy literature by addressing the importance of authenticity, sensitivity, and cultural understanding in storytelling. We will explore ethical depictions of non-traditional characters and discuss how to create inclusive narratives that resonate with readers from all backgrounds.”
The panel will be Saturday, July 27, 2024, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm PDT in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Public Library
