Doctor Who landed in San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H this Friday with a fun look back at the most recent season and a peek forward at what we can expect for season two.
“Doctor Who” stars Ncuti Gatwa (“Fifteenth Doctor”) and Millie Gibson (“Ruby Sunday”) were joined by showrunner, writer and executive producer Russell T Davies at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 on Friday, July 26. The trio participated in a packed Hall H Panel and discussed the Fifteenth Doctor’s first season, fan reactions, behind-the-scenes stories and even showed a special sneak peek of the upcoming Christmas Special featuring guest star Nicola Coughlan (clip available HERE). The panel was moderated by Josh Horowitz (host, Happy Sad Confused podcast and MTV).
To fans’ delight, Davies also officially announced the “Doctor Who” spinoff “The War Between The Land And The Sea” and its cast Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient.
“The War Between Land and Sea” summary:
When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war. Created by “Doctor Who” showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies, who wrote the spinoff with Pete McTighe (“A Discovery of Witches,” “The Pact,” “Doctor Who”), the series features the triumphant return of the Sea Devils, classic “Doctor Who” villains first seen in 1972.
Other highlights from the panel include a few “wow” moments from Russell T Davies: “You never could have dreamt that this could happen in 2024 when the show goes back to 1963.” Davies also shared that when they aired Rogue and the Doctor started singing Kylie Minogue, she texted him because she was thrilled.
When asked how he developed his take on the Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa said, “I had a long list of incredible actors who came before me so I drew from all of them. I took little bits of all of them.”
Millie Gibson, asked how Ruby has changed, said “She wanted to find her mother but she found herself along the way.”
Davies also noted that it’s next to impossible to keep secrets about the show because of all the leaks, but that “Leaks are part of the joy!” He said that because they film outdoors on the streets of Cardiff, fans are able to see everything happening so information about the show is bound to get out.
Fans were also treated to the first look at this year’s Christmas Special trailer with guest star Nicola Coughlan! Watch here now:
The recent season featuring the Fifteenth Doctor is currently available to stream on Disney+ where available and on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
