I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 #1

Buffy the Vampire Slayer 10 1

Writer: Gage, Christos N.
Artist: Isaacs, Rebekah
Cover Artist: Morris, Steve

The Buffy comics take place after the TV show ends, continuing the adventures of Sunnydale’s most awesome vampire hunter. In this season, we’ll see how her dabbling in magic will impact her life.

Wonder Woman #29

Wonder Woman 29

Writer: Azzarello, Brian
Artist: Chiang, Cliff
Cover Artist: Chiang, Cliff

Sigh. I have a hard time with this series. It’s a great story – just not a Wonder Woman story. From the looks of this issue, it seems like Diana is beginning to come to terms with her new role as the God of War (shudder). I’m picking it up, but I’m not happy about it.

Red Sonja #8

Red Sonja 8

Writer: Simone, Gail
Artist: Geovanni, Walter
Cover Artist: Frison, Jenny

Last month Sonja dealt with a cannibalistic chef to please a king. Now, she’s off to find the world’s greatest animal trainer. Hey, it’s all in the name of art.

East of West Volume 2: We Are All One

East of West Vol 2

Writer: Hickman, Jonathan
Artist: Dragotta, Nick
Cover Artist: Dragotta, Nick

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse hanging out in the wild west. Well, not really hanging out. More like having a hand in bringing the world to its knees. If you plan on reading this great second volume, please make sure you pick up the first volume. Hickman’s writing is best when you read every last word he’s written.

The Fuse #2

The Fuse 2

Writer: Johnston, Antony
Artist: Greenwood, Justin
Cover Artist: Greenwood, Justin

The Fuse’s first issue was great – man transfers to the police department aboard a space station, gets paired with a hardened female detective. With a murder on day one, these two have got to figure out how to work together to protect the people of the space station.

Lazarus #7

Lazarus 7

Writer: Rucka, Greg
Artist: Lark, Michael
Cover Artist: Lark, Michael

Lazarus is a comic you should be reading. It’s complicated, deals with economic and social differences, is set in a cool futuristic society, and is fantastically written and drawn. It is worth investing in the story, either through individual issues or trades. In this issues, Forever looks more into the recent thefts of Carlyle property and learns more about the Freemen Resistance.

Rocket Girl #4

Rocket Girl 4

Writer: Montclare, Brandon
Artist: Reeder, Amy
Cover Artist: Reeder, Amy

DaYoung is a teenage police officer from the future stuck in the 80s. With few people believing who she is, she’s got almost nothing to work with. Fun comic with great art by Amy Reeder!

Sex Criminals #5

Writer: Fraction, Matt
Artist: Zdarsky, Chip
Cover Artist: Zdarsky, Chip

Fraction and Zdarsky are KILLING IT in this mature readers title. After finding someone with the same unique gift, Jon and Suzie have to learn to live together. Hijinks ensue.

Sovereign #1

Sovereign #1

Writer: Roberson, Chris
Artist: Maybury, Paul
Cover Artist: Maybury, Paul

New book from Image! By Chris Roberson, too, a great writer. This series looks to be set in an ancient world that was familiar with gods, demons, and magic. It may be a good book to recommend to that friend of yours who loves Game of Thrones and has never read a comic…

Daredevil #1

Daredevil 1

Writer: Waid, Mark
Artist: Samnee, Chris
Cover Artist: Samnee, Chris

Same creative team as the last run on Daredevil, easy jumping-on point for new readers. Matt Murdock has moved to San Francisco, and now he’s got to protect his new home! Highly recommend!

Iron Man #23.1

Iron Man 23.1

Writer: Gillen, Kieron
Artist: Ross, Luke
Cover Artist: Mundo, Mike Del

Malekith! Iron Man! Classic UK Marvel character yet to be revealed! Everything is awesome! (FYI: For those of you new to comics, anything from Marvel with a .1 or .now means it’s a jumping-on point and the start of a new story. Don’t be afraid to read it!)

Ms. Marvel #2

Ms Marvel 2

Writer: Wilson, C. Willow
Artist: Alphona, Adrian
Cover Artist: McKelvie, Jamie

So exciting! After Kamala undergoes a strange transformation, she’s got to learn how to deal with her new powers. If you haven’t read the first issue, there’s a reprint of it coming out, too!

Uncanny X-Men #19.1

Uncanny X-Men 19.1

Writer: Bendis, Brian Michael
Artist: Bachalo, Chris
Cover Artist: Bachalo, Chris

Society fears and hates them, humans persecute them, they sleep with one eye open…we all pretty much know the deal with the X-Men. If you haven’t been reading lately, I suggest you remedy that this week. The original five X-Men have travelled through time and are now teaming up with the radicalized Cyclops. Just read it, ok?

X-Men #12

X-Men 12

Writer: Wood, Brian
Artist: Anka, Kris
Cover Artist: Dodson, Terry

Last issue of the Ghosts storyline! Now the Sisterhood is armed and ready for battle. Are the X-Men prepared?

That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
