I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.
So, let me tell you what to read this week.
Revelations #2 (of 6)
Writer: Jenkins, Paul
Artist: Ramos, Humberto
This title, from BOOM!, features mystery within the Catholic Church and beautiful artwork. It’s a mini-series, which may give some readers a peace of mind knowing that there is a definite ending to the story.
Batman Black and White #6 (0f 6)
Stories written and illustrated by Cliff Chiang, Dave Taylor, Olly Moss and Becky Cloonan, Adam Hughes and Dave Johnson
Batman Black and White is a great series for fans of Batman who have never read an issue in their life. This mini-series is composed of short stories written by various creators and illustrated in black and white. You don’t have to worry about continuity or what’s going on in the larger DC Universe – you just have to like Batman.
Apocalypse Al #1 (of 4)
Writer: Straczynski, J. Michael
Artist: Kotian, Sid
I am so excited for this mini-series. I like Straczynski’s writing, I like Image’s freedom for creators, and I like stories about paranormal investigators preventing the ending of the world. Alison “Al” Carter is an investigator charged with preventing various apocalypses from happening. What more could you ask for?
Writer: Rucka, Greg
Artist: Lark, Michael
*Wild arm flailing* This is a FANTASTIC series. Hard to jump into for new readers, but the first trade is available from Image. Forever Carlyle is the family’s Lazarus, an individual who protects the family. Set in a dystopian future, Forever investigates a rebellion. We also get to see more of her childhood in this issue.
Black Widow #3
Writer: Edmondson, Nathan
Artist: Noto, Phil
This series so far is a nice, slow burn. If you were a fan of Black Widow in the Avengers movies, please check this series out!
Loki Agent of Asgard #1
Writer: Ewing, Al
Artist: Garbett, Lee
For years, we had kid Loki, the adorable little punk you loved to hate. After Young Avengers, Loki grew up into a teenager (possibly to capitalize on the Loki love out there from the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Now, he’s got his own series. Should be interesting!
Ms. Marvel #1
Writer: Wilson, C. Willow
Artist: Alphona, Adrian
This is the one you’ve all been waiting for, right?! The first SOLO TITLE FEATURING A TEENAGE FEMALE PAKISTANI-AMERICAN. Who just so happens to write her own Avengers fanfic on the internet. She’s just like us! But seriously, the fact that this book exists is amazing. PLEASE check it out!
Writer: Wood, Brian
Artist: Anka, Kris
Say what you will about Marvel’s weird numbering system, but it makes it easy to see when a new arc starts in a book. This is one book you’ll want to check out – it’s an X-Men team book featuring all women. And Jubilee with a baby she adopted. We’ve got some team change-ups in this issue (if you want to know where Rogue is, check out Uncanny Avengers; if you want to know where Kitty Pryde is, check out All-New X-Men), but the overall feel of the book is the same.
Happy Marriage?! Vol. 4
Story and Art by Maki Enjoji
If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably guessed that I’m a huge fan of this series. That’s all I’m going to say.
That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
