I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Lumberjanes #1 (of 8)

Lumberjanes 1

Writer: Stevenson, Noelle
Artist: Allen, Brooke A.
Cover Artist: Stevenson, Noelle

Five teenaged girls hanging out at a scout camp? Probably going to be the best all-ages, all-girls team book ever. Plus, there’s a mystery to be solved in this mini-series!

Star Wars #16

Star Wars 16

Writer: Wood, Brian
Artist: Crety, Stephane
Cover Artist: Cooke, Sean

So, last month we met Princess Leia’s betrothed. Luke threw a fit about the whole thing, and Han sulked around. The drama and action continues in this AMAZING Star Wars story.

East of West Vol. 2 TP: We Are All One

East of West Vol 2

Writer: Hickman, Jonathan
Artist: Dragotta, Nick
Cover Artist: Dragotta, Nick

I’m a little bit in love with East of West, even if I usually have no idea what’s going on. Bypass the confusion and pick it up in trades. When you buy trades, you’ll get a chunk of the series all at once, which leads to better digestion of the story. East of West follows the Horsemen of the Apocalypse as they shape the strange, new American West.

Manifest Destiny #6

Manifest Destiny 6

Writer: Dingess, Chris
Artist: Roberts, Matthew
Cover Artist: Roberts, Matthew

Manifest Destiny is one of my new favorite comic books to come from Image. It’s the story of the adventures of Lewis & Clark in an America that is full of mysterious, dangerous creatures and people. This is the final issue in the arc, which means the first trade will be hitting stores soon.

Peter Panzerfaust #18

Peter Panzerfaust 18

Writer: Wiebe, Kurtis J.
Artist: Jenkins, Tyler
Cover Artist: Jenkins, Tyler

Go read this series right now. World War II story of Peter Pan. Each issue builds upon the last, so make sure you go back and read the first 17. Well worth your time.

Shutter #1

Shutter 1

Writer: Keatinge, Joe
Artist: Del Duca, Leila
Cover Artist: Del Duca, Leila

Not quite sure about this series yet, but solicitations call it the Indiana Jones of the 21st century. Plus it has a woman of color as the main character.

All-New Doop #1 (of 5)

All New Doop 1

Writer: Milligan, Peter
Artist: Lafuente, David
Cover Artist: Allred, Michael

Hear me out on this one…Doop is weird. Doop is an X-Men. X-Men do weird things. This is going to be a weird book. But, like much of the current Marvel books, it’s not going to take itself too seriously, which means it will be a fun mini-series.

All-New X-Men #25

All-New X-Men 25

Writer: Bendis, Brian Michael
Artist: Various,
Cover Artist: Immonen, Stuart

After the events of the Trial of Jean Grey, the X-Men move on with their lives. This issue is larger than normal and should set the tone for the teens’ lives after the trial.

Captain Marvel #2

Captain Marvel 2

Writer: DeConnick, Kelly Sue
Artist: Lopez, David
Cover Artist: Lopez, David

Now that Carol is turning her attention to space, we get to see how this hero deals with the new frontier. What lies in store for her!?

Iron Fist Living Weapon #1

Iron Fist Living Weapon 1

Writer: Andrews, Kaare
Artist: Andrews, Kaare
Cover Artist: Andrews, Kaare

If you like kung fu, you should look into this series. Dig into this classic Marvel character with this number 1 issue.

Nightcrawler #1

Nightcrawler 1

Writer: Claremont, Chris
Artist: Nauck, Todd
Cover Artist: Samnee, Chris

With all the events since his death, how is Kurt going to handle his return to life? With Claremont at the helm, this new series is sure to be a great X-Men book.

That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
