I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

John Flood #1

Writer: Jordan, Justin
Artist: Coehlo, Jorge
Cover Artist: Coelho, Jorge

John Flood

From Previews:

What’s to Love: Justin Jordan exploded onto the comics scene just four short years ago with The Strange Talent of Luther Strode and caught everyone by surprise. Now he brings us John Flood, a series that combines the metaphysical with the procedural in a way we think is really fresh. Joining him is Jorge Coelho, whose fantastic work on Polarity and Sleepy Hollow made him a BOOM! favorite. Perfect for fans of Desolation Jones and Sherlock Holmes.

What It Is: As the result of a government experiment, John Flood no longer needs to sleep, but now he’s in a constant dream state and sometimes can’t tell what’s real and what isn’t. But a side effect is that he sees patterns and makes connections no one else can, which serve him well in his new ‘career’ as a makeshift PI. Together with a burly ex-cop, Flood begins to investigate when he ‘sees’ one man responsible for thousands of unsolved murders, but now he himself has caught the killer’s attention…

Creepy serial killer story, interesting twist. I love the idea of a man who cannot sleep and exists in a dream-like state. It certainly makes for a great story in this first issue.

Angela Asgard’s Assassin vol 1: Priceless

Writer: Gillen, Kieron
Artist: Jimenez, Phil
Cover Artist: Hans, Stephanie

From Previews:

All her life, Angela – finest warrior of the Tenth Realm of Heven – was raised to hate Asgard with every fiber of her being. But Angela has learned the truth about her identity: She is Thor’s sister. She is an Asgardian. Now, cast out of her home, Angela must strike out on her own! But how does she become the guardian of a demonic child? Why do both Asgard and Heven want it so badly? And how does Loki fit in? Pursued by Asgardian warriors, Angela and her charge cross the Realms from Earth to Vanaheim, and even travel to outer space, where her teammates the Guardians of the Galaxy lend a hand. But she soon sees no other option than an invasion of her own homeland – that’s right, Angela must fight her way into Heven! Collecting ANGELA: ASGARD’S ASSASSIN #1-6. Rated T+

I liked this series a lot more than I anticipated. The team did a great job fleshing out Angela more and making her a stand-out character in the Marvel universe.

Ms Marvel #17

Writer: Wilson, G. Willow
Artist: Alphona, Adrian
Cover Artist: Anka, Kris

Ms Marvel 17

From Previews:

The team-up to end all team-ups has finally arrived! Carol “Captain Marvel” Danvers and Kamala “Ms. Marvel” Khan face the end of the world HEAD ON in this epic issue!
Rated T+

*grabby hands* How much do you think Kamala will freak out when she sees Captain Marvel? I just hope, for her sake, she plays it cool!

Maid-Sama 2-in-1 vol 1

Writer: Fujiwara, Hiro
Artist: Fujiwara, Hiro
Cover Artist: Fujiwara, Hiro

From Previews:

Can Misaki trust Usui to keep her secret from the rest of the kids at school? And why the heck is he always showing up at the maid café? Maybe she should start taking him seriously when he says he likes her – especially when he throws in an unexpected kiss!

This is a series I’ve never read before, but I’m totally a sucker for shojo manga with a main character with a secret life. I’m really excited that it’s being released in this format!

That’s it for this week’s pull list!  If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
