I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Broken World #1

Writer: Barbiere, Frank J.
Artist: Peterson, Christopher
Cover Artist: Peterson, Christopher

From Previews:

What’s to Love: We’re thrilled to publish the one new original series co-created and written by Frank J. Barbiere (Five Ghosts, Avengers World) in 2015. Broken World is a gripping sci-fi thriller and survival adventure great for fans of Y: The Last Man or The Massive. Barbiere and co-creator/artist Christopher Peterson (Grindhouse, Mayday) will explore the lives of people left behind in the apocalypse. What It Is: With a meteor days away from causing an extinction-level event on Earth, time is running out for Elena Marlowe. While most of the planet’s population and her family were approved by the government to escape on one of the giant spaceships headed to another planet, her application was denied due to her mysterious past. With the meteor fast approaching, Elena desperately tries to find a way to fake her way onto the last ship out.

This book is IMPRESSIVE. Everything about it took my breath away. Broken World left me wanting more, a lot more. I cannot wait to read more of this series. New series like Broken World and Arcadia give me renewed hope for the direction comics are heading.  Check out the preview from BOOM:

Grayson Vol 1: Agents of Spyral

Writer: Seeley, Tim

From Previews:

A thrilling new chapter of Dick Grayson’s life begins in this title collecting the start of his new hit series. It’s a super-spy thriller that will shock you and prove one thing: You may think you know Nightwing – but you don’t know Dick! As he digs into the mysterious organization known as SPYRAL and learns more about his new partner, Helena Bertinelli, how can Dick keep track of all the lies? Or will he fall apart once he can no longer tell fact from fiction? Plus: Dick Grayson goes toe-to-toe with the Midnighter! Collects GRAYSON #1-4, a story from SECRET ORIGINS #7 and GRAYSON: FUTRUES END #1

Ok, I’m the lady who picked up this trade just because Dick Grayson has a stunning personality and a stunning body. Can’t blame me, right? The collection is a little silly, full of gadgets and spy machinations. Overall, a fun read.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #6

Writer: North, Ryan
Artist: Henderson, Erica
Cover Artist: Henderson, Erica

From Previews:

* The start of a new arc! Squirrel Girl meets some potential new allies, including… GIRL SQUIRREL??
* I don’t know why we put question marks there; it’s actually what happens!
* Also a hippo named ‘Hippo’ is in this issue! This character already existed and we absolutely did NOT make him up at the last minute!

If you are curious about this series AT ALL, check out this issue. Squirrel Girl is fun and refreshing, and ideal for fans of Lumberjanes and anything that’s happy.

That’s it for this week’s pull list!  If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
