I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Material #1

material1

Writer: Kot, Ales
Artist: Tempest, Will
Cover Artist: Muller, Tom

A man comes home from Guantanamo Bay, irrevocably changed. An actress receives an offer that can revive her career. A boy survives a riot and becomes embedded within a revolutionary movement. A philosopher is contacted by a being that dismantles his beliefs. Look around you. Everything is material.

The first issue of Material was a little on the heavy side for me. From the get-go, I can tell it is going to be difficult to follow all of the storylines introduced in this series. However, if you enjoy watching pieces fall together, Material may be the comic for you. Ideal for mature readers.

(1989) #9 and #23, and material from X-MEN GOLD #1. Rated T+

This is actually a pretty cool tribute to the game-changing issue. After listening to all of Rachel and Miles X-Plain the X-Men, I’ve had a pretty strong desire to read the major historical issues of the X-Men series. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the start of the X-Men as we know it!

Secret Wars Journal #1

Secret_Wars_Journal_1_Cover-600x911

Writer: Shen, Prudence
Artist: Bachs, Ramon
Cover Artist: Wada, Kevin

* Is LADY KATE of 1602 the nefarious HAWKEYE BANDIT who robs from the rich and gives to the poor?
* Can an enslaved band of MUTANTS in EGYPTIA overthrow their overlord, KHONSHU?
* Can YOU afford not to read the coolest, hippest, most continuity-important book in all of SECRET WARS??? Because this is TOTALLY THAT BOOK. But don’t tell anyone. It’ll be our little Secret

I usually don’t recommend books that are a tie-in (last week’s A-Force was obviously an exception), but I’m intrigued by a period piece featuring Kate Bishop.

There are quite a bit of Convergence and Secret Wars books and tie-ins coming from DC and Marvel this week. As a reader, I have a hard time keeping up with events, so I usually skip them or read snippets. If you are a tie-in fan and have some to recommend this week, let me know in the comments section!
