I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.
So, let me tell you what to read this week.
Over the Garden Wall #1
Writer: McHale, Pat
Artist: Campbell, Jim
Cover Artist: Campbell, Jim
What’s to Love: Airing last November, Pat McHale’s Over the Garden Wall was Cartoon Network’s first-ever original animated miniseries. We loved the eerily sweet story of two half-brothers trying to find their way home so much we published a companion one-shot that was quickly snapped up by folks who just wanted more of this world to experience. Now, we’re expanding the world of Over the Garden Wall with McHale and returning artist Jim Campbell with a full-length story
I’ve never seen the animation, but the artwork was too cute to pass out this week. The story is just as adorable as the art. I found Over the Garden Wall to be a quick, fun read that I would pass along to elementary school children.
Zodiac Starforce #1
Writer: Panetta, Kevin
Artist: Ganucheau, Paulina
Cover Artist: Sauvage, Marguerite
An elite group of teenage girls with magical powers have sworn to protect our planet against dark creatures . . . as long as they can get out of class! These high-school girls aren’t just combating math tests. They’re also battling monsters! But when an evil force infects leader Emma, she must work with her team to save herself – and the world – from the evil Diana and her mean-girl minions!
Maybe you haven’t heard this, but I absolutely love magical girl stories. I usually get my fill from manga, but I’m more than happy to open my heart to new American series like Power Up and Zodiac Starforce. Zodiac, by the way, is absolutely amazing. There are so many nods to classic magical girl series like Sailor Moon and Revolutionary Girl Utena. This comic was MADE FOR ME.
Nextwave Agents of HATE Complete Collection
Writer: Ellis, Warren
Artist: Immonen, Stuart

RRRAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!! Action! Excitement! Explosions! The Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort, or H.A.T.E. (a subsidiary of the Beyond Corporation©) put NEXTWAVE together to fight Bizarre Weapons of Mass Destruction. When NEXTWAVE discovers that H.A.T.E. and Beyond© are terrorist cells themselves, and that the BWMDs were intended to kill them, they are less than pleased. In fact, they are rather angry. So they make things explode. Lots of things. If you like anything, you will LOVE NEXTWAVE! BOOM! Collecting NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E. #1-12.
Confession: I have an older edition of this series, but I never sat down and read it. Now that it is circling around again, I think it’s time to tackle it.
That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
