I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.
So, let me tell you what to read this week.
Writer: Starr, Jason
Artist: Mutti, Andrea
Cover Artist: Irving, Frazer
WHY WE LOVE IT: We can’t get enough innovative mashups of some of our favorite genres: Fantasy, Horror, and Mystery. Plus, we’re fascinated with the science of Near-Death Experiences (NDE)! WHY YOU WILL LOVE IT: Award-winning novelist Jason Starr (Wolverine Max, The Chill) and artist Andrea Mutti (Conan, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) deliver a gripping but deeply human drama set in an uncertain world. WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Near future, and some people who have had Near-Death Experiences have come back ‘changed.’ They exhibit extreme behavioral changes, becoming increasingly paranoid and violent, and no one knows why. People who have had NDE’s fall immediately under suspicion, and in some cases, are murdered by justice-seeking vigilantes. It is in this world where Beth, a quiet high school student with a bright future, will learn just how quickly friends and family will turn on her when she has the bad luck of surviving the worst night of her life
I missed out on picking up this series week-to-week, and now I’m excited to read this all in one sitting!
Tomb Raider #13
Writer: Pratchett, Rhianna
Artist: Santacruz, Derliz
Cover Artist: Adams, Brenoch
Rhianna Pratchett, writer of the 2013 Tomb Raider video game, begins a new arc! Lara’s quiet life working at the British Museum is shattered as she finds herself drawn into a dangerous game with her friend’s life at stake-a friend who was thought to be already dead!
New arc! Lara needs to take control of the Croft estate, but there is a huge barrier. But her friend Sam has a great idea to side-step that pesky little matter…
Orphan Black #1
Writer: Fawcett, John
Artist: Kudranski, Szymon
Cover Artist: Staggs, Cat
One. Of a kind. Sarah’s life was changed dramatically after witnessing the suicide of a woman who looked just like her. Sarah learned that, not only were she and the woman clones, but there were others just like them, and dangerous factions at work set on capturing them all. Now, the mysterious world of Orphan Black widens, with new layers of the conspiracy being peeled back in this miniseries by co-creator John Fawcett!
You know, I’ve never seen Orphan Black. However, now that it’s coming out in comic format, I may just jump into the Orphan Black universe. If you watch the show, let me know how this comic holds up to the original!
The Fade Out Vol. 1
Writer: Brubaker, Ed
Artist: Phillips, Sean
Cover Artist: Phillips, Sean
BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS’ newest hit series, THE FADE OUT is an epic noir set in the world of noir itself, the backlots and bars of Hollywood at the end of its Golden Era. A movie stuck in endless reshoots, a writer damaged from the war and lost in the bottle, a dead movie star and the lookalike hired to replace her. Nothing is what it seems in the place where only lies are true. THE FADE OUT is BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS’ most ambitious project yet.
If you fell in love with Fatale and Criminal like I did, you need to check out this series. Old Hollywood + crime makes this a great, unique series.
Writer: Latour, Jason
Artist: Rodriguez, Javier
Cover Artist: Rodriguez, Javier
