I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.
So, let me tell you what to read this week.
Power Up #1
Writer: Leth, Kate
Artist: Cummings, Matt
Cover Artist: Cummings, Matt
It has been foretold that four noble warriors of incredible strength would be gifted with cosmic abilities at a moment of planetary alignment…which, yeah, something definitely went wrong here. Amie is a disaffected twentysomething with a lot of attitude, Kevin is a washed-up athlete way past his prime, Sandy’s a mother of two teenagers, and Silas…is a goldfish. Just a normal goldfish. Are we sure we read that prophecy right?
The opening is fantastic – reminiscent of Sailor Moon. The way the characters initially interact and the crazy powers they get…I’m hoping Power Up and Zodiac Starforce help usher in an era of magical girl comics! I’m really looking forward to what else this comic has in store for us.
Writer: Willingham, Bill
Artist: Buckingham, Mark
Cover Artist: Malavia, Nimit
It’s the final trade paperback volume of FABLES! No, wait – it’s FABLES #150, the grand finale of the best-selling, award-winning comic book series! And it’s also an original graphic novel in the tradition of 1001 NIGHTS OF SNOWFALL! Yes, it’s all this and more! Join us for 150 – that’s, right, 150! – pages of new stories starring your favorite Fables, all from the mind of Bill Willingham. It all starts with an 80-page lead story illustrated by series regulars Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha, plus stories illustrated by Mark Schultz, Gene Ha, Neal Adams, Andrew Pepoy and many more! Don’t miss the final bows for Boy Blue, Stinky, Lake and more in this once-in-a-lifetime issue that also features a foldout cover by Nimit Malavia that opens into a four-panel mural! It’s even got metallic ink!
Not so much a specific recommendation this week, but a chance to reflect on a great series. Fables was introduced to me by a comic book store employee a few years ago, and it has been one of my favorite stories. I’m working on getting caught up, but I am very, very tempted to just read this final story before the parts leading up to it.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica Homura’s Revenge vol 1
Writer: Quartet, Magica
Artist: Kawazu-ku, Masugitsune
Cover Artist: Kawazu-ku, Masugitsune
If Madoka Kaname had known of the tragic transformation that would mark the end of her magical-girl journey, how would her story have unfolded? In this telling of her story, Madoka remembers the outcomes of her previous timelines – but so does Kyubey. Even with the knowledge of her previous lives, can Madoka outmaneuver Kyubey and avoid her fate?
You guys watch Puella Magica Madoka Magi? It’s great – trust me on this one. Crazy awesome take on the magical girls genre. Yen Press puts out manga that ties into the anime. In this volume’s case, it’s a what-if take. I’m here rooting for Madoka to escape her ending!
That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
