I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.
So, let me tell you what to read this week.
Beyond Belief #1
Writers: Acker, Ben, Blacker, Ben
Artist: Hester, Phil
Cover Artist: Hester, Phil
From Previews: Based on the hit Nerdist podcast! It’s time to send the little ones to dream land, and set your radio’s dial to ‘SPOOKY.’ Steel yourself for mysterious suspense in…BEYOND BELIEF! Meet Frank and Sadie Doyle, toast of the upper crust! Headliners on the society pages. And oh yes…THEY SEE GHOSTS! Who cares what evil lurks in the hearts of men…unless evil’s carrying the martini tray!
Such a fun, cute book. Recently, I started watching Pushing Daisies again. This comic has some of the same morbid humor found in that show. I have never listened to the show it is based on, but now I’m interested in learning more about Frank and Sadie and their ghostly adventures.
Criminal Vol. 4: Bad Night
Writer: Brubaker, Ed
Artist: Phillips, Sean
Cover Artist: Phillips, Sean
The best-selling crime series gets weird in this strikingly-designed new edition from Image.
From Previews: I could not put this book down! I’ve loved having a chance to read the new editions of the Criminal series. I want to remind you that these are standalone graphic stories – you need no prior knowledge of other Criminal collections to enjoy any one of these. This story features a cartoonist with a murky past who gets involved with a dangerous couple. Ideal for mature readers.
Writer: Zdarsky, Chip
Artist: McLeod, Kagan
Cover Artist: McLeod, Kagan
From Previews: A space expedition goes horribly wrong because if it didn’t there would be no story! Reluctant explorer Keith Kanga and his crew crash land on KAPTARA, a world filled with danger and weird danger and dangerous weirdos! And if he can’t survive then earth, the place where YOU live, is doomed! Join CHIP ZDARSKY (Sex Criminals the Duck) and KAGAN McLEOD (Infinite Kung Fu) as they put the ‘fi’ back into ‘sci-fi’ and pretty much disregard the ‘sci’ part in this epic story of punching and love!
Great start to the series! I love the characters introduced and the general premise of the story. It certainly has Zdarsky’s unique voice, which means there will be plenty more pop culture references and sick burns. Ideal for mature readers.
That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
