I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Welcome Back #1

Writer: Sebela, Christopher
Artist: Sawyer, Jonathan Brandon
Cover Artist: Sawyer, Jonathan Brandon

Welcome Back

From Previews:

What’s to Love: We believe Christopher Sebela is one of the most exciting new comic writers and his idea of reincarnated assassins who are forever fighting, killing, and loving each other throughout endless lives is another reason why. Plus, Jonathan Brandon Sawyer’s (Critical Hit) expressive art style reminds us of Becky Cloonan and Sean Gordon Murphy, and it’s just perfect for Welcome Back. What It Is: Mali and Tessa have lived hundreds of different lives throughout time, caught up in an eternal cycle as they take part in a war so old that neither side remembers what they’re fighting for anymore. As Mali wakes up in her newest life, she suddenly becomes self-aware and starts to question everything, especially why she continues to fight. But elsewhere, Tessa is already on the hunt…

What a weird book. The first half reads totally different from the second, which mimics the shift in Mali’s understanding of her life. After reading this first issue, I’m definitely interested in what’s going on in this book.

Rat Queens #11

Writer: Wiebe, Kurtis J.
Artist: Sejic, Stjepan
Cover Artist: Sejic, Stjepan

Rat Queens 11

From Previews:

Featuring the debut of new regular series artist STJEPAN SEJIC (WITCHBLADE, SUNSTONE)! ‘DEMONS’ Road Trip! Having survived the end of the world, the Queens follow Hannah back to where it all began: Mage University. With Necromancers being hunted by a mysterious cadre of religious zealots, Hannah will see to it that the Council of Ten, the overseers of the mage community, do something about it.

I’m so excited for this new stage in the Rat Queens series. Sejic is one of my favorite storytellers, and I think he will bring something interesting to the series for the next few issues until Tess Fowler and Tamra Bonvillain take over as regulars!

Collecting CAPTAIN MARVEL (2014) #12-15. Rated T+

Captain Marvel in SPACE! Hanging with the Guardians! The Black Vortex storyline may make this volume a little difficult to read, but it’s so worth it for Carol.

From Previews:

Marvel Comics presents the all-new Ms. Marvel, the groundbreaking heroine who’s become an international sensation! Kamala explores her newfound powers, but will the weight of the legacy before her be too much? Encounters with the maniacal Inventor and the Inhumans’ royal family; team-ups with her favorite hero Wolverine and the Inhumans’ dog, Lockjaw

By the looks of it, this will be a great volume to pick up if you haven’t read the series yet. I absolutely love Kamala, and I’m so happy to see the beginning of this series get a great treatment like this.

The nuttiest and most upbeat super hero in the world is starting college! And as if meeting her new roommate and getting to class on time isn’t hard enough, now she has to deal with Kraven the Hunter, too? At least her squirrel friend Tippy-Toe is on hand to help out. But what can one girl, and one squirrel, do when a hungry Galactus heads toward Earth? You’d be surprised! With time running out and Iron Man lending a helping hand (sort of), who will win in the battle between the Power Cosmic and the Power Chestnut? Plus: Squirrel Girl’s classic debut! Collecting UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #1-4 and material from MARVEL SUPER-HEROES (1990) #8

Such a great start to a fun series! Squirrel Girl is body-positive, full of self-esteem, and just plain happy. It is one of the most unique comics to come out of the Marvel Universe these days.
