I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Giant Days #1

Giant Days 1
Writer: Allison, John
Artist: Treiman, Lissa
Cover Artist: Treiman, Lissa
From Previews:
WHY WE LOVE IT: John Allison is well known for his funny and intelligent webcomics Bad Machinery and Scary Go Round. His story of three friends at university lightly flavored with the occult features some of the best dialogue in comics, and we couldn’t help but think it’s like Monty Python goes to college. Sign us up! WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: John Allison’s daily webcomics are hilarious, the kind of strips where every panel makes you laugh out loud. As a result, John has earned a large, loyal following of readers that have followed his work daily for the past 12 years. This is a series for fans of things like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scott Pilgrim, or Gunnerkrigg Court will not ant to miss. WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Susan, Esther, and Daisy started at university three weeks ago and became fast friends because their dorm rooms were next to each other. Now, away from home for the first time, all three want to reinvent themselves. But in the face of handwringing boys, ‘personal experimentation,’ influenza, mysterymold, nuchauvinism, and the willful, unwanted intrusion of ‘academia,’ they may be lucky just to make it to spring alive.

I’ve been looking forward to this comic since I read a preview of it a few months ago.  The first issue is great – it’s a mix of slice-of-life story and college drama.  I’ve been craving an American comic series that is straight drama and friendships, and Giant Days looks like the answer to what I want.

The Courageous Princess Vol 1: Beyond Hundred Kingdoms

The Courageous Princess
Writer: Espinosa, Rod
Artist: Espinosa, Rod
Cover Artist: Espinosa, Rod
From Previews:
Once upon a time, a greedy dragon kidnapped a beloved princess . . . But if you think she just waited around for some charming prince to rescue her, then you’re in for a surprise! Princess Mabelrose has enough brains and bravery to fend for herself!

I love the trend in comics showing women (especially princesses) saving themselves.

Chrononauts #1

Chrononauts 1
Writer: Millar, Mark
Artist: Murphy, Sean
Cover Artist: Murphy, Sean
From Previews:
From MARK MILLAR (Kick-Ass) and SEAN GORDON MURPHY (Punk Rock Jesus) comes a bromance for the ages! Corbin Quinn and Danny Reilly are two buddies who love to have fun. They’re also scientific geniuses. When their research leads them to a time-traveling adventure, will they use their knowledge for the good of all mankind? Or use the space-time continuum for their own ends? This is the story of man’s first, televised steps through the time-stream and everything going wrong in the process.

Talk about first issues!  This one is spectacular.  Hooked me immediately, and now I can’t wait for the next issue.  I love Murphy’s style, and he knocks it out of the park in Chrononauts.

Red One #1

Red One 1
Writer: Dorison, Xavier
Artist: Dodson, Terry
Cover Artist: Dodson, Terry
From Previews:
What happens when America’s greatest hero…is a Russian Spy? Soviet Agent Vera Yelnikov is sent to 1977 Los Angeles by the Kremlin to become an American Superhero and spread communist values in the land of Uncle Sam in a funky superhero romp straight out of a Tarantino film by TERRY & RACHEL DODSON (Uncanny X-Men, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Harley Quinn) and XAVIER DORISON (Long John Silver, The Third Testament).

A healthy dose of comedy, sex appeal, and superheroics make up Red One.  Slow start to this issue, but I’m looking forward to where this series is heading.  Plus, I really like Vera!

Princess Leia #2

Princess Leia 2

Writer: Waid, Mark
Artist: Dodson, Terry
Cover Artist: Dodson, Terry
From Previews:
* When Princess Leia Organa was captured by the Empire as a Rebel spy, she never betrayed her convictions, even in the face of the complete destruction of her home world, Alderaan. When her rescue came, she grabbed a blaster and joined the fight, escaping back to the Rebel Alliance and helping strike the biggest blow against the Empire-the destruction of the Death Star. But in the aftermath of that victory, the question remains…what is a princess without a world?
* Writer Mark Waid (Daredevil, S.H.I.E.L.D.) and artist Terry Dodson (Avengers & X-Men: Axis, Uncanny X-Men) bring us a story of Leia’s quest to help her people and find her place in the galaxy.

The first issue was AMAZING and left me thirsty for more Leia.  Waid is doing a mighty fine job showing a powerful and compassionate princess.

That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
