I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Giants Days #5

Giants Days 5

Writer: Allison, John
Artist: Treiman, Lissa
Cover Artist: Treiman, Lissa

From Previews:

During a pre-Christmas ball, Daisy kisses a boy she shouldn’t have, while Susan may have done more than that with McGraw. Esther dreads going home for holiday break for fear of running into her ex.

Giant Days has the advantage of being a great series to jump in at any time while understanding enough of the story. The focus is on enjoyment, and each issue is more about the story within the issue than sweeping plot. I love comics like this, especially since there are some threads that connect all the issues and make reading it serially rewarding. In this issue, the girls are getting ready for a ball, Susan is stressing about McGraw, Daisy can’t decide who she likes, and Esther is seriously creeped out by horrible guys.

Black Canary #2

Writer: Fletcher, Brendan
Artist: Wu, Annie
Cover Artist: Wu, Annie

From Previews:

In the wake of their first major fight, Dinah’s realized that her new bandmates are completely unprepared to keep themselves alive in a scrap.

As far as first issues go, this one is a great jumping-on point. The feel and attitude of the first issue continues, but more backstory is given. The pullout guide written by Burnside Tofu reporter Tantoo la Biche is the perfect way to add another layer to the story without bogging down readers with narration. This issue ends with a great cliffhanger that will bring you back for the next installment.

Island #1

Island 2

Writer: Graham, Brandon
Artist: Graham, Brandon
Cover Artist: Graham, Brandon

From Previews:

PRETTY DEADLY artist EMMA RIOS and KING CITY, PROPHET, and MULTIPLE WARHEADS writer/artist BRANDON GRAHAM bring you a new ONGOING COMICS MAGAZINE. Each issue holds three issue-length chapters of new work from various creators around the globe. PRINTED OVERSIZED WITH NO ADS!

This sound so interesting to me, and I’m really looking forward to the finished product.

Penny Dora and the Wishing Box vol 1

Writer: Stock, Michael
Artist: Grace, Sina

Once upon a time (on the day before Christmas) a young girl named Penny Dora found a mysterious box on her front doorstep. A magic box with the power to grant wishes. Which sounded great…until Penny Dora found herself face-to-face with a horde of fire-breathing dragons, oodles of monsters and at least seven dwarves…all thanks to the girl she used to call best friend, now known as Princess Elizabeth. Hawkeye #22

Writer: Fraction, Matt
Artist: Aja, David
Cover Artist: Aja, David

Anybody actually remember what happened in the last issue? It was SO long ago that the new series of Hawkeye came out before this one even wrapped up. Whatever, I’ll still read it and probably love it.

That’s it for this week’s pull list!  If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
