I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Giant Days #2

Writer: Allison, John
Artist: Treiman, Lissa
Cover Artist: Vass, Adam
From Previews:
When Freshers’ Flu strikes the dorm, no one gets off easy. Daisy enters a onesided relationship with an offbrand Polish cold cure given to her by Ed Gemmell, Susan is forced into nicotine withdrawal, and Esther becomes incapable of distinguishing fever dreams from reality. Death stalks the dorm halls by night!

I don’t normally recommend a second issue or an issue in the middle of a story arc, but Giant Days blew me away last month.  I fell in love with the series from the first few pages.  Had some major freshman year flashbacks in this issue.  We all went through the sick weeks in college, and they were miserable.  Thanks to BOOM, we have a preview of the first few pages of this issue:

Lumberjanes #13

Writer: Watters, Shannon
Artist: Allen, Brooke A.
Cover Artist: Allen, Brooke A.
From Previews:
Special standalone issue with original series artist Brooke Allen. Ever wonder how the Lumberjanes first met? Take a trip back to the first day at camp and see how their friendship to the max got started.

Standalone issue!  Standalone issue!  If you’ve ever wanted to check out Lumberjanes, this is your shot!  We get a look at the life of the Lumberjanes before they head to camp, and it is amazing.  We also learn the origin of Molly’s hat.  We have a sneak peak from BOOM!

Bandette Vol 2: Stealers Keepers

Bandette Vol 2
Writer: Tobin, Paul
Artist: Coover, Colleen
Cover Artist: Coover, Colleen
From Previews:
The Eisner Award-winning digital series is back to steal readers’ hearts once again! The Great Thieving Race is on, as Bandette and rival Monsieur compete to steal priceless artifacts from a criminal organization. But its response could make this Bandette’s final crime spree! Collects Bandette #6-#9, plus bonus stories!

World’s Cutest Thief is at it again.  This collection is adorable and worth checking out.  This is a great all-ages comic to pass along to anyone you want.  I want to be Bandette so bad.

The Fade Out #5

Writer: Brubaker, Ed
Artist: Phillips, Sean
Cover Artist: Phillips, Sean
From Previews:
The second act of BRUBAKER and PHILLIPS’ biggest hit ever begins with a bang! Someone knows who killed Valeria Sommers, but can our ‘heroes’ find them without exposing themselves? And will their search lead them to answers they don’t want to find? A perfect jumping-on point for new readers, released the same day as the trade! And packed with bonus back pages articles only found in the single issues.

New arc of The Fade Out is out this week.  Might be a bit confusing to jump in, but I’m sure you are a smart reader.  With the bit of background info given in the beginning and the flow of the story, #5 is a good place to jump in and check out Brubaker and Phillips’ latest original work.

Runlovekill #1

Writer: Canete, Eric
Artist: Canete, Eric
Cover Artist: Canete, Eric
From Previews:
Sought after by elements from her violent past, fugitive and assassin Rain Oshiro has just 24 hours to escape a barricaded city while trying to evade a military force determined to either capture or kill her.

Only picked this up because it has the absolute most manga-sounding title ever.  Half of the issue is silent, with fight scenes intermingled with a woman playing the cello.  While the first issues leaves more questions than answers, it is still an intriguing start to a brand new story.

Nutmeg #1

Writer: Wright, James F.
Artist: Crofts, Jackie
Cover Artist: Crofts, Jackie
From Previews:
Poppy Pepper just wants to survive junior high and avoid her rich rival, Saffron Longfellow, and her brownie-baking minions, The Lady Rangers. But when mysterious new girl Cassia Caraway arrives, she teams up with Poppy and together they plot to bring Saffron and crew down. Variant cover by Josh Eckert, limited to 2000 copies!

Set up as a teen girl crime drama, Nutmeg follows the bake sale ongoings of the Lady Rangers.  Poppy and Cassia are ready to take down the club’s Queen Bee with a recipe for disastrous brownies.

That’s it for this week’s pull list!  If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
