I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Lumberjanes #2 (of 8)

Lumberjanes 2

Writer: Ellis, Grace
Artist: Allen, Brooke A.
Cover Artist: Stevenson, Noelle

You read last month’s introductory issue to this fun series, right? Lumberjanes is a fun all-ages book featuring five girls at a camp where fantasy and reality meet. Join in on their adventures!

Star Wars #17

Star Wars 17

Writer: Wood, Brian
Artist: Crety, Stephane
Cover Artist: Leza, Victor Manuel

This series continues to impress me each month. As a long-time Star Wars fan, Wood’s extension of the story is faithful to the characters while simultaneously developing them even more. As Leia prepares for her wedding day (to secure a new Rebel base!), Luke discovers the Arrocharians are less than enthusiastic to have a formal alliance with the Rebels. Bonus: somebody crashes the party.

Justice League United #1

Justice League United 1

Writer: Lemire, Jeff
Artist: McKone, Mike
Cover Artist: McKone, Mike

Hey Canadians! You might be interested in this series. Animal Man, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Stargirl, and Adam Strange team up to stop evil from happening! Personally, I’m excited to get to know Stargirl some more, especially within the New 52 context.

Manifest Destiny Vol. 1

Manifest Destiny Vol. 1

Writer: Dingess, Chris
Artist: Roberts, Matthew
Cover Artist: Roberts, Matthew

If you’ve been following this column, you know that I love this new series from Image. Lewis and Clark are exploring the New World, and it is full of mystery and fantasy. This first volume contains issues #1-6, giving new readers the first arc. Plus, Image prices their first volumes at $9.99 – a fantastic price for six full issues in a collection.

All-New X-Men #27

All-New X-Men 27

Writer: Bendis, Brian Michael
Artist: Immonen, Stuart
Cover Artist: Immonen, Stuart

The Brotherhood is back in this issue from Marvel. After the events of Battle of the Atom, the team from the future continues to hang out in the present. Now that the original X-Men are with Scott Summers and his crew, how will they handle these intruders?

Captain Marvel #3

Captain Marvel 3

Writer: DeConnick, Kelly Sue
Artist: Lopez, David
Cover Artist: Lopez, David

Captain Marvel, in space, with the Guardians of the Galaxy. That’s really all you need to know about this issue. Oh, and someone tries to take off with her cat and spaceship.

Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #1 (of 4)

Deadly Hands of Kung Fu 1

Writer: Mike Benson
Artist:Tan Eng Huat

New mini-series from Marvel! It’s a kung-fu murder mystery as Shang-Chi looks for the killer of his former lover in England. Did I mention she worked for MI-6?

Coffin Hill Vol. 1

Coffin Hill Vol 1

Writer: Kittredge, Caitlin
Artist: Miranda, Inaki
Cover Artist: Johnson, Dave

Eve Coffin unleashed something 10 years ago during a wild night of sex, drugs, and witchcraft. This darkness was never contained, and it could be the end for her. Volume 1 from Vertigo contains the first seven issues of this new series!

That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
