I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.
So, let me tell you what to read this week.
Lantern City #1
Writer: Jenkins, Paul
Artist: Magno, Carlos
Cover Artist: Carre, Benjamin
WHAT’S TO LOVE: From the writings of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, to comics like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Lady Mechanika, the detailed and imagination-fueled steampunk movement has excited fans worldwide. Set in an original, sprawling steampunk world, Lantern City explores everything we love about the genre and what it takes to change a person’s place in the world. WHAT IT IS: Sander Jorve just wants to keep his wife and son safe. Living in the brutalized lower class of Lantern City means living in near constant darkness, the enormous walls of the city always looming overhead, while the upper class enjoys the elevated, interconnected towers and airships above. When Sander’s brother-in-law, the persuasive activist Kendal, convinces him to infiltrate the brutal ranks of the Guard, he’s set on a dangerous path that will test his abilities and beliefs, all in the name of making a difference for his family and his caste.
Classic dystopian story, great opening. Not sure if this series is going to stick with me, but I’ll give it three issues to impress me!
Harrow County #1
Writer: Bunn, Cullen
Artist: Crook, Tyler
Cover Artist: Crook, Tyler
Emmy always knew that the deep, dark woods surrounding her home crawled with ghosts, goblins, and zombies. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she learns that she is connected to these creatures-and to the land itself-in a way she never imagined. Don’t miss the first issue of this southern gothic fairy tale from the creator of smash hit The Sixth Gun, beautifully and hauntingly realized by B.P.R.D.’s Tyler Crook!
I ALMOST skipped out on Harrow County, but I’m glad I didn’t. This first issue was amazing, and so, so creepy. I’m digging the witch stories from Wytches and Rachel Rising, and I have a feeling that Harrow County will be right up there.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt Trade Paperback
Cover Artist: Tagro,
Panty and Stocking are cute but highly dangerous angels, booted out of heaven for wrath, sloth, lust, envy, avarice, and gluttony (at least pride wasn’t high on their list). Now residing among the sinners of Daten City, the angels try to earn their way back into grace by exorcising evil at the behest of their questionable preacher boss, the Afro-bedecked Garterbelt!
Yeah, everything about this manga is right up my ally. I’ll be reading it this week – let me know what you think of it as well.
Writer: Ellis, Warren
Artist: Shalvey, Declan
Cover Artist: Shalvey, Declan
Once upon a time, there were five crazy people, and they poisoned the 21st Century. Now they have to deal with the corrosion to try and save us all from a world becoming too weird to support human life. INJECTION is the new ongoing series created by the acclaimed creative team of Moon Knight. It is science fiction, tales of horror, strange crime fiction, techno-thriller, and ghost story all at the same time. A serialized sequence of graphic novels about how loud and strange the world is getting, about the wild future and the haunted past all crashing into the present day at once, and about five eccentric geniuses dealing with the paranormal and numinous as well as the growing weight of what they did to the planet with the Injection.
Not going to lie, I don’t know exactly what’s going on in this story. BUT I trust Ellis to make it a good one. I’ll be sticking it out for at least a few issues to see where it’s going and what the pay-off is going to look like.
Writer: Brisson, Ed
Artist: Level, Brian
Cover Artist: Level, Brian
Robbie never asked for any of this. While drunkenly walking home from a punk show, he’s hit with lightning and wakes to find that he’s been chosen as the new host for The Mantle, a power set of unimaginable scope. Despite his lack of interest, he’s forced into action. The Plague, a being who has spent 50 years killing every previous host of The Mantle, is already coming for him.
This reads as a down-and-dirty superhero story, one that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’m usually not a fan of trying out superhero stories outside of Marvel and DC, but this one has my interest so far. I absolutely loved the ending of this issue, and it makes for some good discussion in the future.
Writer: Hester, Phil
Artist: McCrea, John
Cover Artist: McCrea, John
SPECIAL INTRODUCTORY PRICE OF $1.99! Science is a lie, an opiate for the masses. The truth is, magic makes the world go ’round. And when magic breaks, MYTHIC fixes it. Apache shaman Waterson, Greek immortal Cassandra, and cell phone salesman Nate Jayadarma are the crack field team assigned with keeping the gears of the supernatural world turning, and more importantly, keeping you from ever knowing about it. Join Eisner nominee PHIL HESTER (Green Arrow, The Coffin) and Eisner winner JOHN McCREA (Hitman, The Boys) on their latest expedition to the dark heart of weird comics.
Great concept for a book. Love the idea that science is the opiate for the masses and ancient myth and religion is the truth. Definitely a fun perspective, lots of fun and creepy stuff in this issue. First issue sets up the series with a decent amount of exposition to get you started.
Bucky Barnes Winter Soldier Vol. 1
Writer: Kot, Ales
Artist: Rudy, Marco
Cover Artist: TBD,
After the tragedy of ORIGINAL SIN, what becomes of Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier? Discover the cosmic answer here as Bucky takes his place as the newest secret protector of Earth! Wounded by a mystery bullet, Bucky traces the evidence to Asgard, where a secret lurks underneath the kingdom. Bucky has the key – but first he must face the Frozen Wolves of Niffleheim! And as the Winter Soldier comes face-to-face with Crossbones, leap 200 years into the future and discover how Bucky’s actions will affect the Marvel Universe to come! It’s a vision of the future like none you’ve ever seen before! But who took a shot at Bucky? Why? And what will be the cost of his action? Collecting BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1-5.
Maybe it’s just me, but I look for every excuse to read about Winter Soldier. So, Bucky is basically the new Nick Fury, and he’s dealing with those changes now. This is an absolutely gorgeous book, and the story is so fun. Plus, Daisy Johnson is featured for all you SHIELD fans out there. I didn’t read Original Sin, but I had no problem jumping into this series and enjoying it.
Gronk: A Monster’s Story Vol. 2
Writer: Cook, Katie
Artist: Cook, Katie
Cover Artist: Cook, Katie
The second collection of Katie Cook’s popular webcomic! Gronk is a monster who is learning to adjust to OUR world through the teachings of Dale, a woman who probably shouldn’t be teaching anyone how to adjust to the real world. Join Gronk, Dale, Harli and Kitty for another year of fun!
If you don’t love Gronk, then you have no heart. This is my favorite webcomic, and I am stoked that Action Lab publishes them in novel format. Great book for both kids and adults.
That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
