I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.
So, let me tell you what to read this week.
Writers: Bradford Winters & Larry J. Cohen
Artist: Daniel Irizarri
What’s to Love: Part social commentary, part family drama, Americatown asks: What if the American Dream gave way to the American Nightmare? In their inaugural comic series, screenwriters Bradford Winters (Oz, Boss, The Americans) and Larry Cohen (Netflix’s Borgia), give us a story great for fans of Transmetropolitan, Children of Men, and the TV show Black Mirror.
What It Is: After an economic collapse and other disasters in the near future, Americans are now the legal and illegal immigrants living abroad. They find work in cities like Buenos Aires, where their very own enclave known as “Americatown” has taken root. Owen, a recent arrival, begins a journey to support and save his splintered family divided between the enclave and home back in the U.S. His struggle is just a small part of the hardships and conflicting agendas in an immigrant community trying to build itself in the shadow of a once great nation.
In one short issue, Winters and Cohen have managed to create engaging characters with unique take on immigration and country relations. I’ll definitely be sticking around for the entire miniseries.
DC Comics Bombshells #1
Writer: Bennett, Marguerite
Artist: Sauvage, Marguerite
The ultra-popular statues from DC Collectibles come to life in their own ongoing comic book series! Learn the story behind this alternate reality where the Second World War is fought by superpowered women on the front lines and behind the scenes! It all begins with the stories of Batwoman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl.
Do you like kick-ass ladies and 40s pinup style? This is the book for you. I’ve read a few of the digital-first issues, and it is very impressive so far.
Gotham Academy #9
Writers: Cloonan, Becky; Fletcher, Brenden
Artist: Kerschl, Karl
If the gang thought it was hard to keep up with their homework before, now there’s a werewolf on campus at Gotham Academy! Talk about distractions!
THERE’S A STAR WARS REFERENCE IN THIS ISSUE. I get crazy excited when I see Star Wars references, no matter how brief. Anyways, the gang is back to their crazy lives dealing with paranormal activities around Gotham Academy. Top-of-the-pile book, always leaves me wanting more.
Writers: Hurley, Jason; Haun, Jeremy
Artist: Haun, Jeremy
THE PILOT SEASON WINNER RETURNS! Modern society is obsessed with outward beauty. What if there was a way to guarantee you could become more and more beautiful every day? What if it was a sexually transmitted disease? In the world of The Beauty, physical perfection is attainable. The vast majority of the population has taken advantage of it, but Detectives Foster and Vaughn will soon discover it comes at a terrible price.
I’m certainly interested in this description, especially the sci-fi bend.
That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
