I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Empty #1

Writer: Robinson, Jimmie
Artist: Robinson, Jimmie
Cover Artist: Robinson, Jimmie
From Previews:
Tanoor lives in an empty apocalyptic world of poison and decay. Her village is all that remains of humanity as they struggle against mutant beasts and rotting bones. But Tanoor finds a chance to save her people when a stranger drifts into town. A stranger armed with the power to grow life from death. A stranger who could change the world-if Tanoor can keep them alive in the deadly world of The Empty.

Kind of a strange story, but really interesting.  The artwork is odd and slightly disturbing in how closely the creatures look like humans.  For this story, it works.

Starlight Vol. 1

Starlight 1

Writer: Millar, Mark
Artist: Parlov, Goran
Cover Artist: Cassaday, John
From Previews:
Forty years ago, Duke McQueen was the space hero who saved the universe. But then he came back home, got married, had kids, and grew old. Now his children have left and his wife has passed away, leaving him alone with nothing except his memories…until a call comes from a distant world asking him back for his final and greatest adventure.

This story blew me away.  I loved the concept of an older man, with a story hardly anyone believes, having this rich history and incredible adventures.  It’s a sweet book, especially for those of you who are fans of old science-fiction stories.

Trees Vol. 1

Trees 1

Writer: Ellis, Warren
Artist: Howard, Jason
Cover Artist: Howard, Jason
From Previews:
Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive. TREES, a new science fiction novel by WARREN ELLIS (Transmetropolitan, Red) and JASON HOWARD (SUPER DINOSAUR, ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN), looks at a near-future world where life goes on in the shadows of the Trees: in China, where a young painter arrives in the ‘special cultural zone’ of a city under a Tree; in Italy, where a young woman under the menacing protection of a fascist gang meets an old man who wants to teach her terrible skills; and in Svalbard, where a research team is discovering, by accident, that the Trees may not be dormant after all, and the awful threat they truly represent.

The cool thing about this story is how much has changed in the world and how little some of these characters consciously think of the landed alien trees.  Everything they do is somehow shaped by the trees’ presence, yet they are not always at the front of their mind.  Also, Trees features a thoughtful discussion on human sexuality that is inclusive and fantastic.

Princeless: Pirate Princess #1

Writer: Whitley, Jeremy
Artist: Higgins, Rosy
Cover Artist: Higgins, Rosy
From Previews:
Princess Adrienne is back! This time Adrienne and Bedelia have found another young princess locked away in a tower and decided to rescue her. But Princess Raven is more than meets the eye and Adrienne may have finally met her match. The story that started on FCBD 2013 will finally be told with Limited Edition Variant cover by the original FCBD artist Soojin Paek.

If you have never read a Princessless story, this is your chance to jump into the series.  The girls in this story are so much fun, and these books are worth investing in and sharing with younger women.  The pirate storyline is going to be so much fun!

That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
