I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

Harrow County #2

HARROWC2COVER

Writer: Bunn, Cullen
Artist: Crook, Tyler
Cover Artist: Crook, Tyler

As Emmy learns the secrets of her world from the strange and terrifying Tattered Skin, her father’s unusual behavior becomes ever more frightening, and the townsfolk begin to assemble with a deadly intent!

Harrow County #1 was so good that I’m going to recommend you check out. Issue #2 starts putting the pieces into play, and I’ve got a feeling that this is going to be a great series.

Batgirl Vol 1: The Batgirl of Burnside

Batgirl

Writer: Stewart, Cameron; Fletcher, Brenden
Artist: Tarr, Babs
Cover Artist: Stewart, Cameron

Barbara Gordon is no stranger to dusting herself off when disaster strikes, so when a fire destroys everything she owns, she spots the opportunity for a new lease on life – and seizes it! Following the rest of Gotham City’s young adults to the hip border district of Burnside, Barbara sets about building an all-new Batgirl

The redesigned Batgirl proved to quickly be a fan favorite. It’s fun, quirky, enjoyable, and is 100% geared towards women. A must-read this week.

Gotham Academy #7

Gotham Academy

Writer: Cloonan, Becky
Artist: Chen, Mingjue Helen
Cover Artist: Cloonan, Becky

Special guest student Damian Wayne drops by the academy – and he is not pleased to meet his new classmates!

Pardon me while I flip out real quick: DAMIAN WAYNE AND MAPS, my new bestie OTP. This is a great issue to just jump into – no extensive knowledge of the preview arc needed to fully enjoy this issue.

Starfire #1

Starfire

Writer: Conner, Amanda
Artist: Lupacchino, Emanuela
Cover Artist: Conner, Amanda

From the writers of the outrageous smash hit HARLEY QUINN comes former Outlaw Starfire in her all-new ongoing series! She’s an alien warrior princess trying to find peace on Earth, and she’ll fight anyone and anything to get it!

If you were pissed off like me about Starfire’s portrayal at the beginning of New 52, then you’ll probably want to give this issue a try. Conner and Palmiotti are out to take back the character and make her something worth reading.

Starve #1

Starve

Writer: Wood, Brian
Artist: Zezelj, Danijel
Cover Artist: Stewart, Dave

UTENSILS DOWN, HANDS UP! WELCOME TO STARVE! Once the world’s most famous chef, Gavin Cruikshank’s been in a self-imposed exile for years. His little foodie television program has since evolved into STARVE, an arena sport that pits chef against chef for the pleasure of their super-rich patrons. It’s a stain on a once-noble profession, and Chef Gavin is ready to go to war to stop it. Two things stand in his way: his arch rival Roman Algiers, and his adult daughter Angie, who probably just wants her dad back and acting normal. Whipsmart world-building and a creative dream team (DMZ, The Massive, Star Wars, Loveless, Hellboy, The Sandman) come together for a brand new monthly series!

Great first issue, and the world-building is intriguing. Just enough to get you interested, not enough to leave you stuffed (ha!). Ideal for more mature readers.

Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps #1

Cap Mar

Writer: DeConnick, Kelly Sue
Artist: Lopez, David
Cover Artist: Lopez, David

* Atten-Hut! These ladies are the best of the best–and will take you down if you threaten their Captain.
* Welcome to Hala Field, where being a part of the elite Carol Corps, requires guts, guile and a whole lot of grit. So put on your uniform and get ready for a high-flying Captain Marvel series years in the making.

*wildly flailing arms, screaming into the sky*

That’s it for this week’s pull list!  If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
