I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.

So, let me tell you what to read this week.

The Midas Touch Vol. 1

The Midas Touch Vol. 1

Writer: North, Ryan
Artist: Paroline, Shelli
Cover Artist: Keogh, John
From Previews:
WHY WE LOVE IT: An edgesave the universe adventure with two buttladies and a dinosaur in a spacesuit? Yes, please! THE MIDAS FLESH was the first comic to come from our BOOM! Box imprint, and it’s everything we love about quirky comics made “for the love of it.”
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Ryan North (DINOSAUR COMICS), Shelli Paroline, and Braden Lamb have already proven to be an unstoppable team on their awardADVENTURE TIME run. Now North’s debut original print comic book series will leave the reader reeling from start to gilded finish.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: We’ve all heard of the Midas touch. You know, the Greek myth about the man who did a number on himself by wishing for everything he touched to turn to gold? Well, you haven’t heard everything. Joey and her space crew have decided to return to Earthplanet completely sectioned off, abandoned, and covered in goldfind out exactly what happened to this once thriving planet and see if they can use that knowledge against the evil empire that’s tracking them down. As luck would have it, they just landed the most powerful weapon in the universe: some ancient dead guy’s body.
I missed out on these issues when they were released monthly.  Really excited see what it’s all about.
Batgirl #37
Batgirl 37
Writer: Stewart, Cameron
Artist: Tarr, Babs
Cover Artist: Stewart, Cameron
From Previews:
The Batgirl of Burnside is the name on everyone’s lips…but she sure is acting strange since she took up residence in Gotham City’s outer borough! Dangerous joyrides? Photo ops? Sequins? Either Barbara Gordon’s gone off the deep end – or there’s a doppelganger under that cowl!

Batgirl continues to be a standout book from DC.  The fun, youthful feeling of the story is enough to bring even the most jaded of former DC fans back to the publisher.

Bitch Planet #1

Bitch Planet 1

Writer: DeConnick, Kelly Sue
Artist: Landro, Valentine De
Cover Artist: Landro, Valentine De
From Previews:
2014 Best Writer Eisner Award nominee KELLY SUE DeCONNICK (PRETTY DEADLY, Captain Marvel) and VALENTINE DE LANDRO (X-Factor) team up for the very third time to bring you the premiere issue of BITCH PLANET, their highly-anticipated women-in-prison sci-fi exploitation riff. Think Margaret Atwood meets Inglourious Basterds.
DeConnick’s latest creator-owned project is an ode to 70s exploitation films.  Grimy and amazing, Bitch Planet is sure to be a new favorite for mature readers.
Shutter #7
Shutter 7
Writer: Keatinge, Joe
Artist: Del Duca, Leila
Cover Artist: Del Duca, Leila
From Preivews:
INDIANA JONES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY RETURNS IN AN ALL-NEW STORY ARC! Kate Kristopher’s finally face-to-face with the sibling she never knew about, who’s dead set on destroying what little Kate has left. Family rivalry was never so cataclysmic in the globe-trotting and mind-melting second arc of the comic book ROBERT KIRKMAN (THE WALKING DEAD) describes as ‘so completely and utterly new that it reminds you of the potential of this medium’! ALL THIS PLUS: say hello to SHUTTER’s new letterer, the legendary JOHN WORKMAN (Thor, Doom Patrol, Heavy Liquid) with his commemorative variant cover and a comprehensive career retrospective written by SHEA HENNUM!

Brand new arc!  Plus, since this is an Image series, the first 6 issues are collected in a trade for about $10.  This is a fun book featuring a a woman of color who has a best friend who is transgendered.  The fact that two of these elements are integrated so seamlessly into the over story is worth checking out.  We need more books with diverse cast, and this is a great example of how it’s done right.

Southern Bastards #6

Southern Bastards
Writer: Aaron, Jason
Artist: Latour, Jason
Cover Artist: Latour, Jason
From Previews:
Dig further into the grim past of the biggest bastard of them all, and discover how Coach Boss came to be the most feared man in all Craw County.

Another new arc coming out from Image this week.  This series is especially good if you live (or lived) in the southern area of the United States.  It just has that feeling, you know?

Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1

Guardians of the Galaxy Annual 1

Writer: Bendis, Brian Michael
Artist: Cho, Frank
Cover Artist: Cho, Frank
From Previews:
* Most days in space aren’t exactly what you’d call normal, but everything seemed to be status quo today.
* That is until a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier showed up out of nowhere…IN SPACE.
* Sometimes you have to go outside your jurisdiction to take care of business, but this might be stretching it a bit.

Just in time for the Guardians of the Galaxy DVD/Blu-ray release…Might be a great place for new fans to jump in and get a taste of what Marvel is doing with the series right now.  Spoiler: they are doing some amazing stuff.

That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
