I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s a great comic book out there for everyone. I love making recommendations to folks – especially new readers – and helping them grow a love for one of America’s unique forms of literature.
So, let me tell you what to read this week.
The Midas Touch Vol. 1
Artist: Paroline, Shelli
Cover Artist: Keogh, John
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Ryan North (DINOSAUR COMICS), Shelli Paroline, and Braden Lamb have already proven to be an unstoppable team on their awardADVENTURE TIME run. Now North’s debut original print comic book series will leave the reader reeling from start to gilded finish.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: We’ve all heard of the Midas touch. You know, the Greek myth about the man who did a number on himself by wishing for everything he touched to turn to gold? Well, you haven’t heard everything. Joey and her space crew have decided to return to Earthplanet completely sectioned off, abandoned, and covered in goldfind out exactly what happened to this once thriving planet and see if they can use that knowledge against the evil empire that’s tracking them down. As luck would have it, they just landed the most powerful weapon in the universe: some ancient dead guy’s body.
Artist: Tarr, Babs
Cover Artist: Stewart, Cameron
Batgirl continues to be a standout book from DC. The fun, youthful feeling of the story is enough to bring even the most jaded of former DC fans back to the publisher.
Bitch Planet #1
Artist: Landro, Valentine De
Cover Artist: Landro, Valentine De
Artist: Del Duca, Leila
Cover Artist: Del Duca, Leila
Brand new arc! Plus, since this is an Image series, the first 6 issues are collected in a trade for about $10. This is a fun book featuring a a woman of color who has a best friend who is transgendered. The fact that two of these elements are integrated so seamlessly into the over story is worth checking out. We need more books with diverse cast, and this is a great example of how it’s done right.
Southern Bastards #6
Another new arc coming out from Image this week. This series is especially good if you live (or lived) in the southern area of the United States. It just has that feeling, you know?
Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1
Artist: Cho, Frank
Cover Artist: Cho, Frank
* That is until a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier showed up out of nowhere…IN SPACE.
* Sometimes you have to go outside your jurisdiction to take care of business, but this might be stretching it a bit.
Just in time for the Guardians of the Galaxy DVD/Blu-ray release…Might be a great place for new fans to jump in and get a taste of what Marvel is doing with the series right now. Spoiler: they are doing some amazing stuff.
That’s it for this week’s pull list! If you have any recommendations for comic fans (and non-fans) out there, share them in the comments section!
