Hello Iggles! For those of us residing in the United States, today is our Independence Day. I figured, who better to write about than one of our quintessential American superheroes, Superman. I’ve written about Superman Unchained before, but #7 was just released on 2 July 2014 and it deserves some major love. Lois continues to be a force to be reckoned with, Batman and Wonder Woman make appearances. There’s humor and fireworks. What more can we ask for?
The issue kicks off with General Lane ready to destroy the Fortress of Solitude, with Superman and Lois inside. Meanwhile, Wraith is in the Batcave ready to destroy Batman. While, this is a Superman story, I gotta say some of my favorite panels were with Batman. The humor Scott Snyder injected into the story had me giggling (particularly the quip about Batman’s toys being insured).
And of course the art, ink, and colors are still amazing. The talents of Jim Lee, Scott Williams, and Alex Sinclair never cease to amaze me. The Superman Unchained books are ones I read over and over (which is a good thing considering…) just to make sure I capture every nuance of both the textual and visual story.
We are leading to the ultimate showdown between Superman and Wraith. Unfortunately, we have no idea when we’ll see that as the solicits for Superman Unchained #8 and #9 were canceled and have not been reissued. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait a year until we see that battle now that Superman understands what Wraith is as well as who he is and what he stands for.
Dynamite Comics Humble Bundle
Back in May I encouraged you to buy the Image Comics Humble Bundle, well now I’m going to suggest getting the Dynamite Humble Bundle. You better hurry though, there are only five days left for this bunch and it’s a huge deal. In celebration of Dynamite’s 10th Anniversary, this bundle features more than $250 worth that you can name your price for and in support of Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Make-A-Wish, and Doctors without Borders. The bundle includes Sherlock Holmes Vol. 1: The Trial of Sherlock Holmes, My Little Phony: A Brony Adventure, Amanda Hocking’s The Hollowland and so much more.
New Book – Deathstroke
Yep, that’s right. Starting in October Deathstroke will have his own book. I don’t know about you, but I think this may have something to do with the popularity of Manu Bennett’s fantastic portrayal of the character on CW’s Arrow. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing the carnage Deathstroke plans to dole out to his enemies. Writer/artist Tony S. Daniel and co-artist Sandu Florea will be leading this new book.
It’s July. That means later this month San Diego is going to be overrun with geeks, nerds, and all varieties of people with a love of comics, movies, and more. Warner Brothers has already announced an event featuring all four of the DC related television series (Constantine, Gotham, The Flash, and Arrow). And this year’s souvenir book features Batman, drawn by Jim Lee on the cover, in honor of Batman’s 75. It’s sure to be another wacky, crazy, and overwhelming convention. I’ll be there and you can catch the convention from my point of view via my twitter and Instagram feeds. And if any other Iggles are attending, I’d love to meet up with you.
That’s it for this month Iggles. I’ll see you again next month. But until then – comment here or find me on twitter. Let’s talk about what you’re reading! And of course Happy Fourth of July!
