Did you miss me and my witty comments about S.H.I.E.L.D.? I was off on vacation last week but surprise of all surprises, in a house with no television!! There was wifi, but no television. No S.H.I.E.L.D. for me makes this one sad geek girl.
First off, I have to say that this is the first episode that I’ve well and truly liked!
A street magician in China has a real ability; pyrokinetics. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s got their eye on him, but so does someone else. Turns out that someone from the Riding Tide has hacked into their databases and found out about Chan(the pyro) as well. Skye tracks the hacker down, only to warn him that the team is coming for him. Some of Skye’s background comes to light and we find out that Miles(fellow hacker and Rising Tide member) is a romantic entanglement.
Meanwhile Chan has been dubbed Scorch by the titular girl in the flower dress. He’s been transported to a research facility where they’ve given him a serum to increase his powers. Of course, they’re not doing this for Scorch, but to fix a flaw in this mysterious serum they’ve developed. And obviously, they have to drain his platelets and strip his ability to safely use fire in order to do it.
Skye is caught, destroying the fragile trust she’s built with the team. They can’t come to the rescue without her hacking skills, though. She and Miles hack while May and Coulson try to rescue Scorch. He’s too drunk on power to be able to go back to being any sort of good guy. Luckily, May carries around some counter-serum in her pocket and Miles is able to hack the building systems so that when he does explode, it is channeled up and out while the team escapes out the front.
Miles is released into the wild with a bracelet that keeps him away from electronic devices. Skye gets a dressing down from Coulson, and her future with the team is in question. At the same time, she reveals some of her motivation for joining the Rising Tide and then the S.H.I.E.L.D. team; a search for her heritage.
The mysterious girl in the flower dress meets with someone in prison and asks him to get in touch with the clairvoyant. We’re left to wonder who the man in prison is, why he likes flowered dresses, and who the clairvoyant is.
Pros: FIRE! Mystery! Some of Skye’s background! A unified bad guy for the team to fight! ABC’s bringing back that scene just before the credits roll!
Cons: May has syringes in her pockets that make pyros blow up?! Hackers bring deus ex machina to a new level!
Did anyone else think that there was some sort of tension between Coulson and May in the beginning? I am intrigued by these bad guys. What will they call themselves? Will we see the girl in the flowered dress again?
Too bad there’s not a new episode for two weeks!
