This month we were lucky enough to catch up with Amanda of Nerdtastic! As well as a huge range of nerdtastic Jewelry, Amanda makes lip balms, perfumes, and even air fresheners! When we realised some of her products are heavily inspired by FOOD, we were all “I LIKE FOOD!?” and knew we had to get our hands on a few items to share with you guys. This month you can win a Hi Puddin’ Perfume Oil (Candy & Bubblegum Scented), Second Breakfast Air Freshener (Blueberry Pancakes scented), and Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster Lip Balm (Lemon Mint scented)! CAN WE EAT THEM TOO?
We had a few questions for the gal behind the brand.
Hi puddin’! What’s your favorite flavor of pudding?
That’s easy. Pistachio. I can eat that oddly colored green stuff all day long.
The International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club matches pen pals each month based on their top 5 geek loves. What are your current top 5 geek loves?
I’m glad you said “current” because my geek loves seem to change as often as I change my socks. So in honor of my socks, I’ll go with Harry Potter as number 1 followed by a very close Supernatural. After that, Once Upon a Time, Arrow/Flash-verse, and Avengers/SHIELD-verse. Of course, if you ask me tomorrow, it might be different based on what series made me really mad during the last episode I watched.
When did you begin your business? What first inspired you to start your business?
I started Nerdtastic back in 2013 after I moved to Chicago. I’ve always liked making things but never thought about selling any of it until going to Wizard World Chicago for the first time. The artisans there truly sparked a fire that has become my life.
What is your workspace like? Do you surround yourself with anything that inspires you, or listen to music to get in the creative mood?
You know when you go on Instagram or Etsy and see these amazing work rooms with everything pristine and gorgeous? Yeah, that’s not my work space. I call my space organized chaos. I know where everything is and there is a system… only I understand the system. When it comes to staying creative, the walls are covered in prints that my kids and I have picked up at Comic-cons over the years. I also put some of their more elaborate Lego creations up on shelves. I think keeping creative pieces help the positive mental mojo. While working, though, I either listen to audio books, Food Network or one of the plethora of Pandora classical stations.
Do you participate in craft shows or conventions, in addition to running your online store? If so, which ones?
Sure do! If you’re in the Chicagoland area, you can catch me at Wizard World Chicago every year and I’ll be a vendor at the Creation Supernatural convention as well. I tend to pop up at art shows, high school craft faires, and whatever else the schedule lets me add. I don’t travel as much as I want to but I do get to shows in Michigan and Pittsburgh.
Do you have a favorite product you yourself love to wear?
I wear my lip balm and perfume all the time… that’s the beauty of being the maker. I actually started making lip balms because I had an addiction to them. Now I have at least 10 in every room of my house. You just never know when you’ll need lip balm!
What has been your favorite item to design so far?
It’s a toss up between my best friend necklace pairs and the newest line of air fresheners. With the necklaces, it’s fun searching through fandoms (and other sources) to find references that bring friends together. With the scents, coming up with combinations and product titles becomes a creative game after a while. Who doesn’t want second breakfast?
Second breakfast is a classic nerd meal! If you had to have a second breakfast, what would your go-to food choice?
Oh man. I feel like it needs to be fluffy buttermilk pancakes with Berries and Bacon… now I’m hungry. Who is taking me to breakfast today?
Does anyone help you run the business? Do you want to give a shoutout to anyone who has helped you along the way or inspired you?
For the most part, I run Nerdtastic myself but I do admit I can’t do everything alone. My oldest daughter helps me put seals on products and comes to some shows to be a baby holder/entertainer and watch the table. I also have two cousins who love to travel so they’ll fly across country to come hang out at events like Wizard World to sell with me. It’s hard to go at everything alone so it’s nice when you have people you can rely on.
What advice would you give to a geek girl just started out who wants to begin her own business?
Stay true to you. It is so very easy to doubt yourself when starting a business. You have a bad show, you doubt. You see somebody starting to make products like yours, you doubt. You have a slow sales week, you doubt. To overcome that, know yourself and know your business plan. Also, do your research! If you want to sell on a site like Etsy or Handmade at Amazon, find groups on Facebook to join and learn from successful shops. Listen to webinars. Read articles. In the beginning, I was very stubborn about wanting to listen to advice from others. I felt like I should be able to figure it out myself. I learned that I don’t need to reinvent the wheel. There are others out there who started from ground up that WANT to share their experience and advice with you. Take it!
If you were a character from a book, movie, TV show, cartoon, or comic book, who would it be and why?
Most days I feel like Molly Weasley managing my household. I tend to be Mama Bear making it work and herding the family where it needs to be.
