We have another wonderful sponsor to share with you today! Meet Carrie, the talent behind Geek Nest!
1. What’s the name of your store, and what do you sell? Where did the name come from?
My store name is Geek Nest and I sell a variety of geeky scented candles and wax melts. I love creating new subtle geeky fragrances. I got the name Geek Nest because “nest” I’ve always felt was an elegant way of describing a home and it accurately reflects what my products are for geeky homes.
2. How did you first get the idea that you wanted to open your online stores?
I actually had another Etsy store but I liked it more as a hobby than a business. I sold comic book decoupage items and I was really good at it. A friend of mine had seen the work I had done and insisted I had to sell my comic book earrings, shoes, and flasks on Etsy. This was four years ago and over time the store became increasingly popular and soon it was taking up too much of my time away from my other hobbies. I still enjoy doing it and I love to teach people how to decoupage with comic books but I shut it down so I could focus more on Geek Nest, my writing, my hobbies, and my career. Geek Nest was an easy transition for me as I had already had the experience selling on Etsy and at craft fairs and I LOVE making and selling the candles.
3. Do you sell your wares in other places besides online?
I do! I attend local conventions and craft fairs. I also sell my items at local comic book stores and tea shops as well and will soon be branching out to some non-local shops as well.
4. Who are your artist/online shop role models?
I love all artists and creators who are passionate, the ones who do it for the love of creating rather than the love of money. The people who despite not being financially successful still create because they love it.
5. Who is your biggest supporter(s) and cheerleader in your life?
My friends and my family. They’re always pushing me to create and push me past my comfort zone so that I can continue to be successful.
6. What would you say to an iggle who wanted to open their own store?
Do it! If you don’t succeed at first, try a different approach. Geek Nest is my third Etsy shop, my first was a flop, my second was cool, and Geek Nest is the coolest. Formulate an idea, develop a plan, implement the plan. Don’t be afraid of failure.
7. What’s your favorite part of running your online store(s)?
My customers. I love hearing from them and how excited they are for the candles! It’s so amazing to share geeky fandoms with people, the geek community is full of great people.
8. What’s your favorite product you have ever made?
So, it’s not a candle but my comic book earrings. I created the base of the earrings out of paper mache so I can design them in any shape that I want and then they’re also super light weight so they don’t tug on your ears. Then I can either paint them a solid color or I can decoupage comic books over them. But if I had to choose my favorite candle from Geek Nest, it would be Thanos’ Obsession. Thanos is one my favorite comic book villains.
My pen pal. I signed up a long time ago when this was first starting. I think I was in Round 3? I’ve been writing to her ever since and it’s fantastic. Getting her letters in the mail just makes my entire day.
