Say hello to Heather, who runs The Nerdy Fox blog and Cheaha Soaps store! Heather blogs about her adventures and makes fantastic bath products – salves, bathbombs, and soap! We had the chance to interview her about her store and blog and her thoughts on the IGGPPC community. Read on to see what she has to say!
My blog is called The Nerdy Fox and my Etsy Shop is called Cheaha Soaps. The Nerdy Fox was thought up by my bestie because I am super nerdy and I love foxes. It is where I blog about my life and things that interest me. Cheaha Soaps is named after the highest peak in Alabama. I sell soap, bathbombs, and salves/balms. Funny side story: I’m originally from Utah and I hardly consider these local mountains, well, mountains. Cheaha Mountain isn’t even as high up as Salt Lake City. I always get a kick out of telling people around here that their mountain is a lower elevation than my hometown.
2. How did you first get the idea that you wanted blog and also to open your online store?
I blog because I enjoy writing about my life and video games. I make soap because it’s actually a really fun and interesting process. I mean, how many people do you know that can make soap from scratch? It’s peculiar, in a way. I love that. My mom made soap all the time while I was growing up. It’s just kind of carried over. I opened our etsy shop after attending local farmer’s markets and realizing that this could actually be a business.
3. Do you sell your wares in other places besides online?
I attend local farmer’s markets and various festivals.
4. Who are your artist/online shop role models?
This is a funny question – as far as artists/online shops go, I don’t have any role models. I kind of just go with what I personally like and hope that other people like it. Blogging-wise is a different story. I adore The Dainty Squid and think that she is just the coolest. I hope that someday I have a blog HALF as cute as hers is!
5. Who is your biggest supporter(s) and cheerleader in your life?
My kids. They’re good sports about everything. They frequently hear, “Hold still, let me take a picture for my blog” and “Here, you have to take a bath and try this bathbomb/soap for Mommy.”
6. What would you say to an iggle who wanted to open their own store?
Research. Research. Research. Everything. I mean, everything. You need to factor in shipping costs and not just the price of shipping, but the price of packaging (boxes, tape, labels, packing peanuts/bubble wrap) and the cost of materials that go into your products. A lot of the time if you can buy in bulk, it makes it cheaper to make a product but you’re forking over more money at the beginning. You have to decide what is better for you. The same goes with blogging. Everyone tells you that you need a niche and that you need to find your blogging BFF – here is the thing, you do need a niche but your niche could be not having a niche. You will need to find blogging friends but it isn’t the end of the world if you don’t. Most importantly, you’ll get there. It won’t happen overnight. But it will happen. Set goals and work towards those goals every single day. It’s not going to be easy but you’ll be so happy that you stuck with it!
7. What’s your favorite part of running your online store(s)?
Shipping products to different countries! It’s one thing to ship something across the country but every time I get an order for a foreign country I get giddy. In the blogging world, when I look at my stats and see where my readers are at, I get happy seeing how many countries are on there. Most of my readers are here in the states but a good number are from Australia and the UK … I have some in Russia and China. It is always exciting.
8. What’s your favorite product you have ever made?
Oh goodness. I don’t know how to answer this one. It feels like whenever I make a new soap or bathbomb or salve… it’s my favorite. The soap that I personally use on a daily basis is my Activated Charcoal Soap. I’m 27 years old and have acne. I have tried so many products over the years and was so disappointed by all of them. I did lots of research and discovered activated charcoal and made some soap and well, it’s the only thing I use on my face now and I haven’t had a break out since. So, I guess that would have to be my FAVORITE soap.
9. Who’s your dream valentine? (Real or fictional)
This might sound lame but I am pretty sure my dream valentine is my boyfriend. It makes me feel super gross and mushy saying that but it’s true. He treats me like a princess every single day and keeps me grounded when my emotional side takes over. He also frequently quotes Star Wars, Star Trek, and LotR – I’m pretty sure he’s a keeper.
10. What’s your favorite part about the IGGPPC?
It’s a great place to connect with other people that share your interests!
