Hi everybody! Welcome to my first IGGPPC blog post! My name’s Lara, and on the third Sunday of the month I’ll be posting up a geekery inspired craft tutorial for all you lovely ladies to try out for yourself!

For my first tutorial, we shall be making a super cute Chewie badge together! The great thing about him is that he’s SO easy to make, and you can pick up everything you really cheaply.

What you’ll need

1. A glue gun – this is my glue of choice because it dries almost instantly, and it holds REALLY well. No worries if you don’t have one though. I’d recommend something like this.
2. Scissors.
3. Black thread, and a needle.
4. Badge template, found here.
5. A brooch back. You should be able to find these in your local craft shop, but I find they’re much cheaper on eBay.
6. Felt, in black, dark brown, light brown, and grey.
7. Pen.

So, let’s get started…

First thing you’ll need to do is print off the template (or, if you’re lazy like me, put a bit of paper on your computer screen and draw around it…). Draw around your template twice on your piece of dark brown felt, then cut them out.

Now we’re going to sew the brooch back onto one of the felt pieces we just cut out. If you’re a newbie, here’s a good sewing tutorial for you to take a look at. Use steps 2 and 3 through each of the holes of the brooch back a few times to make sure it’s secure. These pictures should make it clearer.

Make sure you sew the brooch back onto the side that will be on the outside of the badge. We don’t want pen marks from earlier showing 🙂
One you’re done with that, we’re going to make sure it’s really secure, and look a bit more neat too. Take a piece of scrap felt and lay it over the brooch back, underneath the pin. Then sew across the red lines marked in the picture below. Cut off excess felt, and it should be looking AWESOME.

One side done!
Now, take your other piece of dark brown felt and place them together so that the edges meet. Again, make sure the side we drew on isn’t showing. Now, we sew the edges together! You can use the sewing tutorial from earlier again if you haven’t done this before.
You should now have something like this!
Put this aside for now, and take your light brown felt. Cut out a fluffy looking shape – this will be Chewie’s face!
Now, we’re going to sew on his facial features. Take your needle and thread again, and stitch two little eyes. These pictures should make it clear what to do – go over them a few times to make them stand out more. Then, cut out a little oval from your black felt, and stitch on a nose!

Glue this onto the badge base you made earlier. If you’re using a glue gun, make sure you’ve left it to heat up first, otherwise the glue won’t be hot enough to use. Time depends on how good your glue gun in – my one takes roughly 5 minutes.
Nearly finished! All we need to do now is add his belt. Take your black felt, and cut out a thin strip. Glue one side of the strip down (I would do this at the back, to keep it looking neat), then pull it round the whole of your badge. Make sure you like how it looks from the front before you glue down the other end.
Now we need our grey felt. Cut out three small rectangles, trying to make sure they’re all the same size, and glue them to the front of the belt. And that’s it!

I really hope you all enjoy my first tutorial! If you try this out, I’d love to see how they turn out, so send them to me on Twitter (@larabob)! I’m also open to suggestions and requests for future tutorials – just let me know!
