As you know, DC Entertainment has entered a new era expanding their universe into several different television series on network television. As a huge fan of Vertigo Comics (an imprint of DC Comics), I’m excited to see some of my favorite characters and story lines depicted weekly on the small screen. iZombie returned on March 22nd, so let’s refresh our memories with the most recent episode because there were a lot of big reveals in that episode. Do you remember them? Fair warning, there are spoilers ahead.
Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind
The episode begins inside a very perky, positive, and happy coffee shop with a death outside of it, a particularly gruesome one that ends up with Liv picking asphalt out of the brain before cooking it. Liv appears to turn this week’s brain into a scone (or some other baked pastry) and hilariously offers some of it to Ravi.
So now Liv is filled with positivity and a variety of annoyingly cheerful quotes. Clive and Liv check out the apartment above the coffee shop (from whence the air conditioner unit aka the murder weapon came). They find Pam smoking a joint in the bathtub. Liv knows Pam from her weekend in jail. Pam worked for Leslie Morgan (the murder victim) who gave her a second chance, or several. Pam is a pretty entertaining character (maybe she should be working at the less happy coffee shop?). Because the murder is the least exciting thing in this episode, let’s just get that out of the way. The entitled daughter did it, with assistance from her wannabe-French boyfriend who ends up taking the fall solo.
Science and Zombies
Major is extremely anxious about a viable cure….but Ravi tells Major “Science is a marathon, not a sprint.” They are expecting to find no change in the previously cured and reverted zombie rat, since it has only been a day. Instead they find a very scary, very undead rat. Clearly, there’s some work to be done, quickly, to find a new cure.
Ravi has a big crush on the cashier of the coffee shop, it’s why he returns regularly. The cashier invites Liv and Clive to a memorial for Leslie. Ravi and Liv attend and Ravi tries to make a move…he strikes up a conversation and apologizes for his hair. I can certainly understand, but sadly his crush could not.
“Apologies if my hair looks like I’ve been driving with my head outside the Millennium Falcon…”
“Is that the new Ford?”
Ravi thought her response was a joke, but when she admits she’s never seen it, Ravi has the most perfect look. Clearly, this is not the girl of his dreams.
And the big reveals….
Drake is an undercover cop!!! And he really likes Liv. When the cop, also known as Keith Mars (should we be starting a running list of Veronica Mars alum that make an appearance in iZombie?), tells Drake to give her up because she could blow his cover. He refuses, saying “She’s the one good thing I got in my life.” He’s undercover to gather information on Mr. Boss, but he doesn’t give up information on Blaine (Team Zombie has to stick together).
Mr. Boss figures out Blaine is the one playing him and decides to kill Blaine. Mr. Boss and his goons pick up Blaine (interrupting a wonderful, fitting performance of “Whiter Shade of Pale”) and they slice his throat!! I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t quite expecting that. But of course, Blaine rises from his grave, looking quite pleased with himself. I can’t wait to see what he gets up to next.
Gilda aka Rita shows up at the apartment while Major is there (and just when he was going to tell Liv all about what he’s been doing, kidnapping zombies and all). And when Major leaves, he calls her Rita instead of Gilda. Liv connects the dots and figures out Rita was the one sleeping with Major. And Liv punches her! Seeing Liv’s anger (no full-on zombie required) is perfect.
