What excites you about Dark Fairy Tales? Is it the creep factor, the classic style, or something else? Let’s introduce you to IGGPPC’s prefects and find out what they like about this month’s theme.

Prefect Claire

@claireyfair

Claire, House GlaDOS, Sticker Queen Extraordinaire, Might Be a Cat

Claire hails from the UK, and is the resident Sticker Queen. All things cat-related should be directed to Claire. Seriously. Send her cat pictures. She loves it.

Your favorite dark fairy tale and why?

Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s Beauty and the Beast has Belle kept captive like in the Disney version, however the original beast proposes marriage every night and she constantly turns him down. She is allowed a reprieve and goes to visit her family – but then she finds out that the beast is dying from a broken heart and she goes back to him.

If you were a  member of the Sidhe (or part of the fairy folklore world) what kind of fae would you be?

I would be a water nymph, as I always feel more at home in the water. I could imagine making a nice lake my home.

As a child, what was the spookiest part of October for you?

The scariest part of October was always the shortening of the days. By the end of the month it would be dark on the way home from school – I’ve always hated that about the winter – the cold and the dark.

You are planning a feast for fairies, what do you serve?

I would serve a lot of sweet things, like berries, tiny morsels of cakes, a whole table full of different things.

What artist best captures your image of what a dark fairy tale looks like?

The artwork from the video game Alice Madness Returns really captures what a dark fairy tale is for me. It’s so vibrant, yet you can see the dark and twisted undertones. If you haven’t played that game, I can highly recommend it.

Prefect Franny

@Raindrop487

Franny, House Organa, ATC Expert, Resident Unicorn

Franny hails from the US and is the human alter ego of Princess Raindrop, a unicorn princess set on spreading love and light around the world. Spot a trail of glitter? There’s a pretty good chance that you’ll find her at the other end.

Your favorite dark fairy tale, and why?

My favorite dark fairy tale is Hansel and Gretel.  Ever since I was a kid, I have dreamed of living in a house made out of gingerbread and candies!

If you were a member of the Sidhe (or part of the fairy folklore world) what kind of fae would you be?

If I were part of the fairy folklore world, I would definitely be more of a Disney fairy girl!  I would probably be most like Iridessa the Light Fairy!

As a child, what was the spookiest part of October for you?

The spookiest part of October is Halloween – the ghouls and goblins!  The things that go bump in the night!

You are planning a feast for fairies, what do you serve?

A lavish spread of wild berries, fruits, honey, and nectar!

Prefect Sophie

@lomwod

Sophie, House GlaDOS, Friend (?) of Birds, The Lost Gilmore Girl

Sophie hails from the UK, hoards hair ties in case Hermione needs one, and really should be living in Stars Hollow.

Your favorite dark fairy tale and why?

In the German tale called The Goose Girl, a maid tricks a princess into swapping identities so the maid can marry a prince. The maid then kills the princess’s talking horse to cover her tracks. The princess gets a job looking after geese. The maid eventually ‘receives justice’ when she is thrown naked into a spike-filled barrel and rolled around the town until she dies. I like this one because I can’t see a way it could be turned into a tale with a happy ending like a lot of other dark fairy tales, and it makes me giggle like an evil queen  :/

If you were a member of the Sidhe (or part of the fairy folklore world) what kind of fae would you be?

I don’t really know so I googled a quiz and got:
You’re a dryad! You’re an all natural, dreamy and artistic kind of person who doesn’t like pretentiousness and hypocrisy. You may be a bit lost and bored in your day to day life, but once you find something you really like or support, you’ll put your full energy into it. Some may find you a bit strange, but you’re just unique and very much your own type of person. You tend to not care what others think of you and aren’t afraid to go against the flow. It mostly seems right about me.

As a child, what was the spookiest part of October for you?

We didn’t ever ‘do’ Halloween in my house, I think I only went trick or treating once so we didn’t really have and spooky parts of October. I love the idea of Halloween though, and always have loads of great ideas; maybe I should hold a party one year.

You are planning a feast for fairies, what do you serve?

I would serve fairy sticks. I don’t know if they’re a proper thing but when my sister and I were young, we would bake biscuits a lot. One time we cut the dough into thin sticks and baked it. We then dipped the ends of the sticks in icing and then in hundreds and thousands. They became our signature bake for a few years after that.

What artist best captures your image of what a dark fairy tale looks like?

I’m not sure of anyone in particular but any dark forest with a gloomy old, run down castle in it. That’s always the first image in my head when you mention dark fairy tales.

Prefect Amanda

@amavongeek

Amanda, House Organa, (Not So) Secretly a Mermaid, Understudy of Thrawn

Amanda hails from the US, keeps monsters in her pockets (do mermaids even have pockets?), and plays happy mail fairy on a regular basis. Need a tiny piece of cheer? She’s the one to call!

Your favorite dark fairy tale, and why?

Alice in Wonderland.  As well known as it is, there are so many variables that make it fascinating for all ages…and there are different variations of it, like American McGee’s Alice, that keep it fresh and interesting.

If you were a member of the Sidhe (or part of the fairy folklore world) what kind of fae would you be?

I’d be the mischievous sort. I love practical jokes (not the mean kind…the ones that get a genuine laugh out of people), and I can’t imagine anyone pulling these off better than the fae.

Mischievous Sidhe

As a child, what was the spookiest part of October for you?

Haunted houses! I love all things spooky, and that was true for me as a kid as well. I loved a good scare, both receiving and giving a few.

You are planning a feast for fairies, what do you serve?

Nuts, berries, and sugar water. Once they are full and sleepy, I might have to make sure they stay….

What artist best captures your image of what a dark fairy tale looks like?

There are a lot of fairy tale artists that I love, but one that I came across recently is DebNise on DeviantArt. Many of her pieces are beautiful and could inspire writers to put a new spin on old tales.
