This month the club celebrates all things extraterrestrial. Collectively, we’ve wanted to believe ever since we first grasped the idea that we, the inhabitants of Earth, might not be alone in the universe. The possibility of life on other planets has been a subject for scientist, astronomers, all manner of artists and now The Geek Girls Pen Pal Club! Join us as we answer these questions, and be sure to answer them yourself in the forums, or by tagging us in your blog posts to social media.

space-cases

1) Has first contact already happened?
Definitely. You’re familiar with cats, right? Clearly they, being super-powerful alien creatures, built the pyramids – and that’s why the Egyptians worshiped them. Heck, we STILL worship them. Aliens. Totally aliens.

2) What do you think is in area 51?
My sanity.

3) What is your favourite alien book/game/movie/TV show?
I was a big fan of So Weird, The Journey of Allen Strange, Space Cases, and Step-sister from Planet Weird as a kid. Nickeldeon and Disney Channel had some really fascinating alien shows and movies! In my adult life, I’m a big X-files lover. Each episode sucks me in, plus Sculley and Mulder are so shippable. I also adore cute and cuddly aliens – think ET, Mac & Me, Stitch from Lilo and Stitch, and the aliens from Toy Story. The cuter, the better!

4) If extra-planetary life is more advanced, what technology or knowledge would you most hope they would share?
The cure for sicknesses and cancer. I would love it if we could empty out cancer treatment centers!

5) What kind of ambassador for Earth would you be? A member of the starship Enterprise or…
I fancy myself a Kaylee Frye sort of ambassador. Trying to be real friendly in my own simple way. So I’d be a member of Serenity’s crew, and bring extra strawberries to my inter-galactic meetings.

district-9

1) Has first contact already happened?
I think so. I’m going to copy Stewie here with the cats answer. But because of Futurama. You know the episode I’m talking about… when the cats try to fix their own planet by stopping Earth’s rotation? Yep, I agree with everything in that episode. Their cuteness is a disguise to get humans to do what they want.

2) What do you think is in area 51?
I’ve never really thought about this. A giant litter box and scratching post for the alien-cats?

3) What is your favourite alien book/game/movie/TV show?
District 9 was a fantastic movie and I loved how it portrayed a somewhat accurate world if aliens did find themselves living on Earth.

4) If extra-planetary life is more advanced, what technology or knowledge would you most hope they would share?
Definitely the technology to cure sickness. The healing pods that have been shown in sci-fi movies would be pretty darn awesome.

5) What kind of ambassador for Earth would you be? A member of the starship Enterprise or….
I’d be the one taking notes and making tea for our new alien friends. I get tongue-tied easily so I’d observe quietly and discuss things at a later time once I’ve processed things.

star-wars

1) Has first contact already happened?
Dolphins and mice. You know it. I know it. So long and thanks for all the fish!

2) What do you think is in area 51?
It’s a test facility for experimental aircraft. Wait, was I supposed to be imaginative about this?

3) What is your favourite alien book/game/movie/TV show?
…am I allowed to pick Star Wars? If not, the Hitchhiker’s Guide, obviously.

4) If extra-planetary life is more advanced, what technology or knowledge would you most hope they would share?
Increased brain storage so I can actually remember things like birthdays, and that word that’s just on the tip of my tongue, you know, the one that’s like a ship but it isn’t a ship and it flies around and….

5) What kind of ambassador for Earth would you be? A member of the starship Enterprise or….
I’d probably be in the diplomatic corps. Let’s be real: I can charm the pants off of a nudist and make friends with a rock if I think it needs cheering up. These skills are clearly necessary when dealing with widely varying points of view.

hitchhikers-guide

1) Has first contact already happened?
Hmm as much as I want to believe that physical first contact has happened, I just don’t know. I’m probably the skeptic of the crowd. I do think life out there exists, but I just don’t know if it’s actually gotten here yet. Maybe contact in other ways, though? Radio signals or something?

2) What do you think is in area 51?
Oh secrets for sure. The government doesn’t tell us everything. Maybe evidence they’ve found of life on other plants or other stuff they think we wouldn’t be able to handle.

3) What is your favourite alien book/game/movie/TV show?
I love Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and District 9 was an amazing movie. Also if you haven’t seen the movie CJ7, it’s really good! I also liked Earth to Echo. As for books, it’s got to be Animorphs, hands down. TV show, gotta be Doctor Who.

4) If extra-planetary life is more advanced, what technology or knowledge would you most hope they would share?
Healing tech, time travel, warp drives. I would love for mankind to be given the keys to travel through space and time. Maybe just a TARDIS?

5) What kind of ambassador for Earth would you be? A member of the starship Enterprise or….
Knowing me, I would probably say something stupid and insult the aliens. Can I just fly around on the Millennium Falcon with Han Solo and Chewie? Saving the galaxy and being generally up to no good in the meantime?

x-files

1) Has first contact already happened?
Probably not. The aliens are probably all, “Those folks are soooooooo not ready for us yet.”

2) What do you think is in area 51?
It’s where the government keeps all the unicorns. And glitterbombs and stuff.

3) What is your favourite alien book/game/movie/TV show?
Um, the X-Files. Also Stargate SG-1, the book Contact, Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Oh, that was like seven things…

4) If extra-planetary life is more advanced, what technology or knowledge would you most hope they would share?
Medical and transportation stuff would be awesome. And maybe like “how to get along and not have a bunch of wars and fighting all the time” knowledge.

5) What kind of ambassador for Earth would you be? A member of the starship Enterprise or…
I’m totally the Deanna Troi of the earth ambassador crew. Kind of in the background observing the proceedings to offer advice or diplomatically getting to know our new friends.

invader-zim

1) Has first contact already happened?
I am with Toasty and Summer on this one, I don’t think aliens have been here…yet. I definitely believe in aliens though because if we’re the only planet with life in an infinite universe then that is just depressing. That being said…(see next question)

2) What do you think is in area 51?
Unexplained space debris – our planet is surrounded by space junk right, so maybe even though aliens haven’t got to us yet maybe some alien space junk has landed here

3) What is your favourite alien book/game/movie/TV show?
Invader Zim (cartoon), Doctor Who (TV), EOS 10 (podcast), Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Books), Alien and Aliens (Film), Rick and Morty (cartoon)

4) If extra-planetary life is more advanced, what technology or knowledge would you most hope they would share?
Teleportation!

5) What kind of ambassador for Earth would you be? A member of the starship Enterprise or….
A bad one probably!

monsters-v-aliens

1) Has first contact already happened?
I’m going to go with the “not yet” answer, too.

2) What do you think is in area 51?
.. Area 51 is a real place? I thought it was just a thing in pop culture, like all those 30 year old high school students occupying every TV show from the 90s.

3) What is your favourite alien book/game/movie/TV show?
I’m loving Monsters vs. Aliens at the moment.

4) If extra-planetary life is more advanced, what technology or knowledge would you most hope they would share?
The cure to all sickness. And sustainable anything, really.

5) What kind of ambassador for Earth would you be? A member of the starship Enterprise or….
I would make the aliens tell me about their collective folklore and stories (they gotta have them, too), and I’d be ready with a pen and paper to write it all down (I might use a more advanced version of pen and paper, though, in case we’ve moved on by then).
