With this month’s theme being “For Science!” we wanted to share some of our scientific loves with you.  Keep reading below to learn more about us, including our newest Prefect, Angelica!

Leah House Granger

What fictional scientific discovery do you wish was real?

A fictional science discovery I wish was real would be the TARDIS or the vortex manipulator from Doctor Who. I think it would be so cool to be able to go back to the 1920’s and experience what it would’ve been like in The Great Gatsby.

What is one thing you remember from your science classes in school? Did you have a favorite experiment or teacher?

One thing I remember from science class in school – even though it wasn’t really science related – was that my 5th grade science teacher, Mr. Meckal, let us listen and do the Soulja boy in class. I also remember watching The Magic School Bus which was so much fun. One of my favorite experiments was in high school when we tied-dyed shirts in class.

If you could have dinner and an engaging conversation with any scientist, who would you choose?

I think Nikola Tesla would be really awesome.

Name one scientific discovery that you think has changed, or will change, the world for the better.

I think we need to look more into space travel, or time travel. It may be very ambitious but I think its something we should focus on.

Tell us your pick for best fictional scientist?

Sheldon Cooper.

Sheldon Cooper

What fictional scientific discovery do you wish was real?

Everything they ever showed you on Warehouse 13, although that was also heavily involved with magic as well. But most of their inventions were brilliant.

If you could be a scientist today (or if you ARE a scientist), what kind would you choose to be/tell us about your job.

I would want my field of science to be in astronomy. Space, planets, the moon, space travel…It is fascinating to me.

Has any scientist (real or fictional) or scientific invention greatly impacted your life?

I think there are just too many to name. Think about where we would be without electricity, Air Conditioners, computers, etc. (I spent a long time and could not land on just one. Sorry!)

What is one thing you remember from your science classes in school? Did you have a favorite experiment or teacher?

I did a science fair project when I was in the 6th grade about the human heart and brain- I sculpted one out of clay and labeled all the different parts. I came in 3rd place!

If you could have dinner and an engaging conversation with any scientist, who would you choose?

I would choose a whole dinner party based on electricity; such as James Clerk Maxwell, Michael Faraday, and Alessandro Volta.

Name one scientific discovery that you think has changed, or will change, the world for the better.

The discovery of penicillin, and any other medicine really, would overrule anything else for me. Thinking about the amount of lives medicine has saved and improved, I can’t thinking of anything that would top that.

Penicillin

What fictional scientific discovery do you wish was real?

Time travel!

If you could be a scientist today (or if you ARE a scientist), what kind would you choose to be/tell us about your job.

My dream scientific job would be something to do with electronics. I like electricity and building circuits.

What is one thing you remember from your science classes in school? Did you have a favorite experiment or teacher?

We had a mad teacher who got a pig head to dissect in a voluntary after-school class. She took the eyeballs out, threw them at the whiteboard and watched them “race” as they slid down and then dropped on the floor. It was gross, but awesome.

If you could have dinner and an engaging conversation with any scientist, who would you choose?

Leonardo da Vinci – As someone who was more than “just a scientist”, I believe that Leonardo da Vinci would have many, many interesting conversation topics.

A DaVinci Invention.

Tell us your pick for best fictional scientist?

Sheldon Cooper – Since I first began to watch The Big Bang Theory, I have had a soft spot for Sheldon.

What fictional scientific discovery do you wish was real?

Teleportation – This would be delightful for Iggle use!

If you could be a scientist today (or if you ARE a scientist), what kind would you choose to be/tell us about your job.

As a kid, I wanted to be a scientist and create potions!  If I were a real scientist, I would want to work in chemistry!

What fictional scientific discovery do you wish was real?

Time travel or teleportation. Either would be useful for iggles!

If you could be a scientist today, what type of scientist would you choose to be?

Marine biologist! I love the sea, and sea life, so it’d be a pretty natural fit. It’s something I strongly considered out of high school, and there are definitely times that I wish I would have taken the leap!

Exploring the sea!

Did you have a favorite experiment or science teacher?

I loved all of the experiments in school. I was even the weird kid who looked forward to the dissection labs. I have such a curiosity about everything that learning new things is extremely exciting to me, even when they’re gross!

I was fortunate to have some extraordinary science teachers. One, who was my teacher throughout high school, now runs his own little science store in my hometown. He always tried to make science fun, which is no easy task when your students are often bored and difficult to impress teenagers. His enthusiasm for science and learning really made an impression on me, and it’s a trait I hope that I’m carrying forward thanks to him!

That’s all from us for this month! We’d love to see your answers to the theme questions! Share with us here, on Twitter, or on the forums!

xoxo,

Your Prefects
