Hello, lovelies! Once again it’s time for me to announce the books we’re reading this month. As always, head over to our Goodreads for more fun activities and lively discussions! For May, we had our main pick, a comic for this month, and the monthly IGGPPC reading challenge. This month’s main pick theme was A Book Set in a Place You’ve Always Wanted to Visit, and we had suggestions for books set all around the world and even the solar system- Seattle, New Orleans, Paris, Mars and Tokyo were just a few destinations, but Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan won by a close vote. Mr Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone – and serendipity, coupled with sheer curiosity, has landed him a new job working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything, instead they simply borrow impossibly obscure volumes from strange corners of the store, all according to some elaborate, long-standing arrangement with the gnomic Mr. Penumbra. The store must be a front for something larger, Clay concludes, and soon he’s embarked on a complex analysis of the customers’ behaviour and roped his friends into helping to figure out just what’s going on. But once they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, it turns out the secrets extend far outside the walls of the bookstore…
May was also once again time for us to read a comic and you guys picked the perfect book to go along with the IGGPPC May theme, Super Villains – Batman: The Killing Joke. The Joker is one of the most iconic villains and it will be interesting to see the spotlight turned on him. (discussion post)
Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore & Brian Bolland
For the first time the Joker’s origin is revealed in this tale of insanity and human perseverance. Looking to prove that any man can be pushed past his breaking point and go mad, the Joker attempts to drive Commissioner Gordon insane. After shooting and permanently paralyzing his daughter Barbara (a.k.a. Batgirl), the Joker kidnaps the commissioner and attacks his mind in hopes of breaking the man. But refusing to give up, Gordon maintains his sanity with the help of Batman in an effort to beset the madman.
The book challenge this month is fun, simple and also ties in nicely with the IGGPPC May theme: you’ll need to read a comic where the protagonist is a super villain! Here’s the link to more in depth rules on Goodreads, and there are two lists for suggestions if you can’t find any comics to read. Once you’re done, don’t forget to message my fellow Iggleworms leader, Michelle, for the achievement code!
Finally, we’re trying something new this month: a movie watch-along! Head over to this poll to vote on which book to movie you’d like to watch with the IggleWorms, and keep an eye out on the Twitter, where I’ll announce when we’re watching the movie that gets voted- probably sometime near the end of the month such as the 20th. You have until May 10 to vote, so be sure to head over to the page! If this is a success, I’m sure we’ll watch other movies, so keep brainstorming up some of your favorites. 🙂
That’s it for this month’s news! As always, keep an eye on our Twitter and Goodreads because there’s no telling what exciting activities we’ll plan next! Have a magnificent May and Lil Bub and I both wish that you enjoy tons of excellent reading this month!
