This month’s theme is Notice Me Senpai, and what better way to kick us off than a little everyday Sophie Hatter? Here’s a look based on the heroine of Howl’s Moving Castle.

Howl’s Moving Castle is an recurring favorite, though many people don’t realize it originated as a book by British fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones. Though Howl is one of the most famous of her tales, she also wrote about the fictional world of Dalemark and a cat-like sorcerer in the Chrestomani series. (Basically I’m saying if you only know Howl, you should dig a little further into her library!)

Sophie Hatter is the main character of Howl’s Movie Castle, the eldest daughter of the town hatter, and destined to never find her fortune. In the course of her adventure, she winds up cursed by the Witch of the Waste to become an old woman, winds up at Howl’s castle where she makes a deal with a fire demon named Calcifer, and winds up winning the heart of repeat heart-breaker Howl.

Sophie’s look is fairly consistent throughout the film, which is the look I’ve used for this ensemble. In the book, Sophie wears gray, but the blue-green dress from the film is much more fun, and I chose a trendy lace dress that still has a similar shape to Sophie’s. Her boots are brown and remind me of Victorian era style, so the boots I found for this are of that sort (and available at B.A.I.T. Footwear, if you’re interesting in beautiful vintage styles). The hat and hair bow are her touch of bolder color, and the necklace is reminiscent of Calcifer, her fire demon “friend.”

Think you’ll put together a Sophie-inspired look this week? If so, tweet it to me @joannavolavka and use #igglescosplay to find other everyday cosplayers!
