This month’s theme is Notice Me Senpai, and nobody pines for senpai the way Usagi Tsukino, aka Sailor Moon, pines for Tuxedo Mask. Even though she wants so badly for senpai to notice her, Usagi’s main focus is (usually) on being a rocking guardian of the earth, moon, and beyond. Here’s a look based on her transformed costume, and one for Tuxedo Mask!
Sailor Moon: the character
Usagi Tsukino is just your average middle school girl with a love of food and a big heart ready for romance until she meets a talking cat named Luna, who tells Usagi that her real destiny is to protect the world from the forces of evil using powers by transforming into the pretty guardian Sailor Moon. Together, Usagi and Luna track down and help awaken four other guardians, the Sailor Scouts, and join their forces to stop group after group of villains who want to rain destruction on the earth.
Sailor Moon: the look
This everyday cosplay is based on Usagi’s transformation outfit, as Sailor Moon. She retains the collar and bow, plus the white and blue color scheme of her school uniform, but it changes into an ensemble more in-tune with fighting monsters. To maintain the color scheme, I chose a thick necklace to evoke her collar, and found a red belt with a large bow to stand in for both of the large red bows she wears. The white top has cap sleeves and a v-neck similar to the top of her costume, and the boots, while shorter than Sailor Moon’s, still maintain the shape and color. Bonus finds include the moon earrings and the Luna-inspired black bag.
Mamoru Chiba (Tuxedo Mask): the character
Usagi also encounters Tuxedo Mask, another powered person who seems to be helping her and the other Scouts in their mission, and her feelings for this senpai burn bright, despite her continual frustration with senpai Mamoru Chiba… It’s a good thing nobody is counting on her to distinguish between Clark Kent and Superman is all I’m saying.
Mamoru Chiba (Tuxedo Mask): the look
For this one I decided to go for Mamoru’s day-to-day casual look. He wears a good number of blazers, but I quite like the green one with the black shirt and lavender slacks. Heels on the shoes give it a polished look. I also added a mask necklace and rose brooch as a nod to his alter-ego, Tuxedo Mask.
The nice thing about these looks is that they come together from some basic pieces that would be great as closet cosplay staples. Red boots work for many superhero looks (like Supergirl) and a versatile white or black blouse is always a good base. Will senpai notice you in one of these looks? I think so!
