Have you ever found a story that captured your imagination in a whole new way? Have you been looking for a comic with gorgeous art and an exiting story? How about a cast of primarily female characters, working together to save the planet they call home? Boasting epic battles, intriguing mystery, and even romance, let me introduce you to Earthsong, and the comic artist and writer behind it, Crystal Yates!

Earthsong has been one of my favorite webcomics for many years, and one that I recommend frequently to anybody who will listen! It’s currently in the last week of its Kickstarter, so I wanted to share with you a little about it and encourage you to check it out!

The story of Earthsong centers on Willow, a brand new arrival on the planet Earthsong. Planets in this world are sentient beings, and the planet Earthsong in particular has been tasked with a special mission by the other planets, providing shelter to people from around the cosmos in dire need. When Willow arrives, she finds herself in the middle of a long war between her new home and a rival who has invaded the world. Willow must figure out how she fits into everything all while finding her footing among the folks who have been fighting to protect this planet. Part mythology and part sci-fi, this comic is a perfect mix of beautiful art and creative storytelling that will leave you binge-reading long into the night.

Earthsong is the creation of Crystal Yates. Let’s get to know her a little better!

It’s such a treat getting to chat with you! Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I live in Canada, make webcomics, exhibit at conventions, and look after my kidlets. That about sums up my life!

Got a favorite flavor of pie?

Coconut cream pie!

Have you always wanted to make comics? What drew you to the genre?

I wanted to be an animator, actually. But then I didn’t get into any animation programs at college so that went out the window. I got a university degree in Fine Art History and Anthropology thinking I’d be a museum curator. But then I was so burnt out academically that I wanted to do some art before doing any graduate school. So I started up the comic and I’m still doing it 12 years later.

What inspired you to write Earthsong? Has it surprised you along the way?

I couldn’t say that any particular thing or things inspired Earthsong. I had been drawing several characters since my teen years and grew the story around them. I’m always watching cartoons, reading books, and playing video games (well, whenever I can tear myself away from the comic), so those are definitely my major source of inspiration.

The characters in Earthsong are inspired by or based on mythological or legendary creatures, stories, etc, which is fascinating! If you lived on Earthsong, what kind of character would you be, or what legend would you represent?

I like to think that I’d be something cool like a dragon or a sphinx or what have you, but I’d probably wind up as a Sasquatch.

The International Geek Girls Pen Pal Club matches pen pals based on their Top 5 Geek Loves. What are the top 5 things you’re geeking out about right now?

Any specific information you’d like to share about the Kickstarter?

It ends this coming Tuesday (September 27, 2016) and while I will continue to take orders after the fact, the shipping will be more expensive to the USA then!
