When DC Comics released its first round of bombshell variant covers in June of last year, I don’t think they realized how popular those designs would be. The Bombshells pay tribute to vintage World War II styles and historical depictions of popular characters. The variant comics spawned DC Collectible statues, art prints and all kinds of other merchandise (and became popular designs for cosplayers too).
Last Friday, DC Entertainment announced that the Bombshells will be making a return this August. This time around even some of the iconic male DC characters are getting the bombshell treatment (Hello Aquaman!).
You can check out the full set of variant designs over at DC Collectibles facebook page.
What’s more exciting is that this time around we aren’t just getting more variant covers. DC announced there will also be new statues from DC Collectibles (Cheetah and Killer Frost designed by Ant Lucia and sculpted by Sam Greenwell and Tim Miller, available in Spring 2016) and more new products from Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Universe Online. The bombshells will also have playable characters within DC Universe Online.
There will also be an all-new comic book series!
A brand new title, DC Comics Bombshells, joins the digital lineup in July with print to follow in August. This new book is written by Marguerite Bennett with art by Marguerite Sauvage and will follow the retro-bombshell versions of Batwoman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl in an alternate reality where super-powered female heroes are on the front lines in WWII. The book will introduce other bombshell characters as the story unfolds.
Writer Marguerite Bennett had this to say about the new book:
“DC COMICS BOMBSHELLS is one of the wildest things I’ve ever had the pleasure to create–a story of the DC heroines, all the DC heroines, in a crisis that defines themselves as well as their generation. I cannot possibly tell you how excited and grateful I am to be involved in a story this massive and inventive. The series will explore war stories, romances, mysteries, heists, action adventure, and horror in a way that only these characters could do–I cannot wait for this book to drop. Pun very much intended.”
