There’s nothing better than ending your day with a good book and a cup of hot tea, and this month’s guest, Lindsay, is a true believer in that! Co-creator of Novel Tea Club, she provides subscribers with a good book, some tea, and usually a goodie or two each month. Novel Tea Club is a monthly subscription box that comes in three different genres: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Romance and Young Adult. This month they were happy to provide us with three 37.5g bags of Teapigs tea to giveaway to one lucky Iggle. So stick around and read the awesome interview with Lindsay and enter to win 3 packets of tea!
The International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club matches pen pals each month based on their top 5 geek loves. What are your current top 5 geek loves?
Excellent question. It really depends on what is coming out, what has been recently released, and many of my loves change frequently. At the moment, my loves include:
- Fantasy books (always and forever)
- Harry Potter and Hogwarts houses (proud Slytherin)
- Geographical trivia
- Sword Art Online
- CW DC shows (and Daredevil).
If you were a character from a book, movie, TV show, cartoon, or comic book, who would it be and why?
Oh man…I can’t choose one. No, really. There are too many AMAZING characters in awesome worlds that would be great to be in, or experience the lives of. But, that’s why I read so much, you know? So I don’t have to choose just one-I can live in whatever world I want to. But, if I must choose – Laurana from Dragonlance.
What first inspired you to start your business?
I wanted to share my love of a good night in with other people. I figured I couldn’t be the only one who wanted a night in to read, relax, and enjoy a good novel, and so Novel Tea Club was born. I love everything that I include in my boxes, and I hope that my wonderful clients do as well.
I know that a lot of the products you include in the box are from small businesses or artisans. Where do you source most of your material?
Usually Etsy. I also contact local small businesses, that may not have Etsy, and see if they are interested in being included in Novel Tea Club. We are going to a handmade festival in a few weeks and we are really excited to see what we can procure there!
We try to keep most of our products from Canada, as we are a Canadian company, but we have found that there are not a lot of sellers in this area, so we also source from the USA, and may expand to other regions, particularly those that would benefit from our support of small, fair trade business.
What is your favourite book that was in one of the boxes so far? Which genre is it?
While I love all the genres that we include in the boxes, I am a fantasy girl, through and through. I LOVED The Immortal Muse in the February fantasy box, and I am SUPER in love with April’s fantasy book-but I can’t tell you what it is! I also really enjoyed March’s romance book, The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion, which was hella cute, but not over the top. Don’t get me wrong, I love smutty romance as much as the next girl, but I like plot too.
If you had the chance to include a favourite author’s book in one of the subscriptions, which book or author would you choose?
See, I have several favourite authors, so this is a hard question. There are some that I can rule out right away though – Haruki Murakami is fiction, so he’s out; Laurell K Hamilton is urban fantasy, and doesn’t really fit our genres that well, so she’s out (until we do an urban fantasy box, which is in the works); same with Sherrilyn Kenyon…so I would say Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, authors of the Dragonlance series.
What is your favourite place to read a good book and have a nice cup of tea?
Either the bath, or my bedroom. I have oodles of soft pillows and blankets, and the lighting in great for reading.
Do you have a favourite tea? If so which one?
All of them. Except chamomile. I don’t like chamomile.
Does anyone help you run the business? Do you want to give a shoutout to anyone who has helped you along the way or inspired you?
My business/life partner/husband, Kristan. He runs the Instagram (mostly), and does a lot of the customer service. He encourages me to not get frustrated, and runs the bath for me when I am reading books for future months.
Also, Olivia Canlas and Francois Deschenes, who run Meowbox. They have both been full of information for logistics, and have helped us with a lot of the nitty gritty of running a subscription box. Meowbox has been running successfully for years, and they have been very forthcoming with what has, and has not, worked for them, and are sorta mentoring us.
What advice would you give to a geek girl who just started out and wants to begin her own business?
Research what you want to do, and make sure you have a passion for it. People can really tell if you love what you do, and that can make or break your business. Otherwise, F the naysayers, and just do it.
Thanks for the fun interview Lindsay. Now for our awesome giveaway! The Giveaway will run from April 7 to 17th!!
