When did you begin your business? What first inspired you to start your business?
I began a few months after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BA in apparel design in 2006. I’m pretty shy and anxious so interviewing and going after jobs is not my forte, you might even say I was inspired by the lack of uninspiring job prospects facing me! In the meantime I was spending the rest of my free time doing the thing I love doing most, making things. And then I decided to try out this relatively new little site called “etsy” !
What is your workspace like? Do you surround yourself with anything that inspires you, or listen to music to get in the creative mood?
I work from home in the 3 bedroom apartment that I share with my two cats, so I have one half of my double pallor and 2 bedrooms as workspaces! My apartment is filled with things I love, plus my kitties of course. I listen to a lot of podcasts like Judge John Hodgman, this American Life and various true crime ones & like listen to music like Stars & Jens Lekman.
Where the magic happens and the presents are made.
Do you participate in craft shows or conventions, in addition to running your etsy? If so, which ones?
Yes! I usually do a couple a year. I’ve done the Bust Craftacular and I love to do one local to Providence and Boston- the What Cheer Rock and Roll Yard sale.
Do you have a favorite product you yourself love to wear?
The piece I wear most often is my black velvet leggings, I actually have 4 pairs of them! I pretty much only wear leggings or tights, so fall-spring I wear those leggings almost everyday. The material holds up so well that I can’t tell the difference between a pair I made last week or a pair I’ve washed hundreds of times. I also usually wear one of my acrylic statement necklaces, the ones I wear most often are my Stegosaurus, Swans & Sundae necklaces.
These are a few of Kelly’s favorite things!
Does anyone help you run the business? Do you want to give a shoutout to anyone who has helped you along the way or inspired you?
My assistant/ BFF Liz has worked with me for 6 years now. She’s smart, talented and clever (check out her amazing shop- with-care.net ) and plus she always laughs super loudly at all my jokes.
What advice would you give to a geek girl just started out who wants to begin her own business?
I think the most important thing is to be passionate about the products or services you offer! They should be awesome, special and unique… just like you! ; ) Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t succeed right away, or if what you’re making could use some improvement. I remember when I first set up my etsy shop I was SO excited, I honestly was fantasizing about how I would wake up the next day and everything would have sold. (The opposite happened). But even better- I kept trying to improve & figure out how to make better things, photograph them better, etc. Just click on my ‘sold items‘ page on etsy, go to the very last page and see for yourself!
If you were a character from a book, movie, TV show, cartoon, or comic book, who would it be and why?
ALF, because he’s my spirit animal.
