DIY: Daenerys Targaryen hair

Er, who wouldn’t want to be Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons (to use her snappy full title)? She’s only the coolest, most awesome character in the entire Game of Thrones!

Sorry, small fangirl moment there. You get it.

Check out this easy-to-follow video tutorial for creating those amazing signature Daenerys twists and braids. Wear them with anything from a long white dress to some warrior queen armour (and some dragons, of course) and you’ve got yourself a pretty badass look.

Things you’ll need for this Daenerys look:

  • Some clip-in hair extensions (come on, nobody is naturally blessed with Daenerys hair)
  • A sectioning comb
  • Hair grips
  • Hair ties
  • Hairspray
  • A mirror so you can see the back of your head

Step 1: Clip in your hair extensions

Get the ball rolling by clipping in your hair extensions to give yourself some of that enviable length and thickness. If you’re new to extensions or you need a refresher check out this video on the basics.

Step 2: Create your first two braids

Create a centre parting and then take a thick section of hair from the front of one side for your first braid.

You probably know the drill when it comes to braiding but just in case, here’s a refresher. Split your section of hair into three smaller section. Place an outer section underneath the middle section. Then place the outer section from the opposite side underneath the middle strand.

Once your braid is underway, begin to pick up small strands of hair and add them into each section as you go along. You need nimble fingers but it’s simple enough!

Repeat this process, braiding round to the back of your head. Then you can stop picking up extra strands and just braid the ends right down to the tip of your hair. Secure your braid with a hair elastic.

Now do this all over again on the opposite side of your head.

Step 3: And another two braids

Once you have braided your top section of hair, you want to create another two braids in exactly the same way underneath them. This will give you two beautiful braids on each side of your head that wind their way around to the back of your head and then carry on down to the tips.

Step 4: Make your braids thicker

To give your braids a bolder, thicker look – and cover any visible hair extensions clips while you’re at it – gently pull your braids apart a little. Don’t go overboard and pull whole strands out, you just want to tease them apart a bit.

Step 5: Gather up your braids

Gather all four of your braids and secure them at the back of your head with a hair tie. You can then remove the four hair ties from your individual braids. You should now have a striking half up, half down braided style.

Step 6: Little finishing touches

To complete your Daenerys hair, backcomb the fair at your crown for some extra height and do a final check with your mirror for any visible extensions clips. If you find one, don’t worry – just reposition a braid to cover the pesky thing and secure in place with a hair grip.

You, my queen, are now ready for convention season.
